By RAN ZHENG|Aug 14,2023

Chongqing- Xiyong Customs, a subsidiary of Chongqing Customs District, reported a significant 244% year-on-year increase in the export of self-heating hot pots between January and July 2023.

A total of 43 batches worth over 600,000 yuan (about 83,260 U.S. dollars), were exported to ASEAN countries such as Cambodia and Thailand.

These figures symbolize Chongqing's title as China's hot pot capital, which is widely popular for its spicy flavor. This feature has driven the market demand by offering the authentic taste of hot pot while ensuring ease of purchase.

Industry insiders note that China's domestic market has steadily introduced various self-heating products.

Self-heating hot pots, where you put all ingredients, soup base, and water into a food box renowned for its convenience, have recently gained immense popularity.

Self-heating hot pot requires no external heat source like fire or electricity. When the components in the heating pack are mixed with a bottle of cold water, they release heat adequate for cooking the food.

However, exporting self-heating hot pots come with its set of challenges. Liu Jiayan, deputy commissioner of Xiyong Customs, said that the contained specialized heating pack falls under the flammable solid class of dangerous goods.

Before export, they require an appraisal for dangerous goods packaging. Additionally, as prepackaged food, the self-heating hot pot necessitates an export food inspection and quarantine.

Shen Shuangfeng, production manager of Chongqing Simida Food Co. Ltd., highlighted the company's export journey. Having initiated its self-heating hot pot exports in 2022, the company experienced an overseas demand surge in 2023.

They anticipate their exports to reach 1.5 million yuan by the year's end, showcasing a seven-fold increase from the preceding year.

Liu acknowledged the positive trajectory of self-heating hot pot exports and expressed Xiyong Customs' commitment to support local businesses.

By understanding the standards and requirements of potential countries, Xiyong Customs aids local food enterprises in expanding their reach, introducing the global community to the flavors of Chongqing.

Liu added that Chongqing-based enterprises are innovating with products like self-heating Chongqing noodles. They expect an upcoming venture in the European market.
