Chongqing- Chongqing Municipality plans to accelerate the development of the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS), with the size of the BeiDou industry reaching up to 50 billion yuan (about 6.86 billion U.S. dollars) by 2025, according to Chongqing Municipal Commission of Economy and Information Technology on September 9. 

The BDS is a project built and operated by China as a component of the country's national security and economic and social development strategy. After many years in development, it has become an important new element of China's infrastructure, providing high-accuracy, round-the-clock positioning, navigation, and timing services to global users in all weathers.

BeiDou industry complements Chongqing's digital aspirations

From 2023 to 2025, Chongqing plans to form a comprehensive BeiDou industry ecosystem spanning chip production to other upstream and downstream sectors, positioning Chongqing as a national focal point for BeiDou innovation, industrial development, and large-scale application demonstrations.

With Chongqing's diverse application scenarios, including vast urban regions, rural areas, mountainous terrains, and massive reservoirs, the city is primed to harness the BeiDou system. This move dovetails with the city's rapid infrastructural development in intelligent connected new energy vehicles (NEVs), electronic information sectors, and its burgeoning air and space information industry cluster.

According to an officer from the Chongqing Municipal Commission of Economy and Information Technology, "The deliberate enhancement of the BeiDou industry will substantially complement Chongqing's digital aspirations." Over the past few years, the city has promoted the growth of the BeiDou industry, which now boasts an annual growth rate of over 15% and attracts a batch of renowned companies in the BeiDou sector.

By 2025, Chongqing will make breakthroughs in key technologies, primarily in high-precision positioning, fusion sensing, and communication-navigation-remote fusion within the BeiDou sector. 

Cutting-edge tech products to brighten residents' lives

With the application of BeiDou in various industries, black technology scenarios promise a transformative impact on residents' daily lives. In the intelligent connected NEVs sector, integrating BeiDou chips and high-precision positioning services will further enhance vehicle-to-road cooperation, autonomous driving capabilities, and intelligent cockpit applications.

Smartphones, wearable devices, and service robots will benefit from BeiDou's integration, resulting in upgraded precise positioning capabilities and the birth of smart pensions and intelligent homes.

Furthermore, integrating BeiDou with technologies like 5G and the Internet of Things will ensure more precise urban monitoring, especially for complex structures like bridges, tunnels, and urban transit systems, enhancing urban governance.

BeiDou will support urban road cameras, infrastructure, and intelligent road inspection. Buses and logistic vehicles will be encouraged to install BeiDou equipment and extend to BeiDou-based intelligent travel, ports, hubs, and logistics. "BeiDou+Smart Parking" will also bring precise parking space reservations and guidance.
