Chongqing Reveals Groundbreaking Findings on China's Cybersecurity Patents

Chongqing - According to the China Cybersecurity Industry Patent Big Data Analysis Report, the global count of cybersecurity industry patents exceeds 550,000, primarily concentrated in China, the United States, Japan, South Korea, and India. 

Notably, China leads with over 200,000 patents, exhibiting an explosive growth phase in patent applications since 2010, averaging an annual growth rate surpassing 50%. The main patent distribution spans Beijing, Guangdong, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Shanghai.

The Chengdu-Chongqing area in Southwest China boasts over 10,000 cybersecurity industry patents, experiencing a substantial surge starting in 2013. Predominantly situated in Sichuan's Chengdu and Mianyang, as well as Chongqing's Nan'an and Yubei districts, the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China and Chongqing University of Posts and Telecommunications represent the area's leading institutions.

The report analyzes seven pivotal data categories, including patent application trends, essential standard patents, and more. It unveils that the Chengdu-Chongqing region displays a significant advantage in two crucial technical branches: application security and security situation perception. Cybersecurity technology patents in the region constitute approximately 5.7% of China's total and 2% of the global count. Notably, application security and security situation perception patents make up 18.42% and 19.99%, respectively, showcasing a prominent lead in the region's innovation.

The report was researched and compiled by the Chongqing University of Posts and Telecommunications Intellectual Property Information Center.

Professor Huang Dongdong, Vice Dean of the School of Cybersecurity and Information Law at Chongqing University of Posts and Telecommunications, emphasized the importance of understanding the current state and future trends of cybersecurity technology for the development of a globally influential Sichuan-Chongqing integrated cybersecurity industry.

Furthermore, discussions centered on interdisciplinary training for professionals in cybersecurity and intellectual property. Participants acknowledged the significance of nurturing professionals with hybrid expertise in cybersecurity and intellectual property, indicating a crucial aspect of academic development. Combining law and technology has been a specialty of the School of Cybersecurity and Information Law, enriching their experience in talent cultivation.

The report not only assesses global and regional trends but also addresses recommendations for China's cybersecurity industry planning, critical technologies, talent development, and policy support in the Chengdu-Chongqing area.

Endeavors toward fostering other branches of the industry in areas such as industrial structure, technological innovation capability, talent reserve, patent collaborative innovation, and patent operations are highlighted for future development.

This report has investigated six critical technology branches in cybersecurity, examining the evolution of core technologies, licensing, litigation rights, and collaborative innovation. It concludes with suggestions for China and the Chengdu-Chongqing region regarding cybersecurity industry planning, crucial technologies, talent development, and policy support.
