SW China's Twin Cities Unveil Plan for Ecological Corridors of Six Major Rivers

By RAN ZHENG|Dec 02,2023

Chongqing- Recently, Southwest China's Chongqing Municipality and Sichuan Province have jointly announced a plan for ecological corridors of six rivers in the Chengdu-Chongqing economic circle from 2022 to 2035. It aims to safeguard, restore, and comprehensively manage the ecological corridors of six major rivers- the Yangtze, Jialing, Wu, Min, Fu, and Tuo rivers.

This collaboration is a significant step towards enhancing cross-regional and cross-basin synergistic management in those areas, strengthening an essential ecological barrier in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River, and bolstering the construction of the Chengdu-Chongqing economic circle.

Covering a massive area of approximately 35,100 square kilometers within the Chengdu-Chongqing region, this Plan primarily focuses on the townships and streets along these six rivers within the Chengdu-Chongqing economic circle. The Plan prioritizes conservation and natural restoration and aims to transform the "six rivers" region into a key ecological protection zone and showcase ecological and cultural harmony in the Bashu areas.

Furthermore, the Plan strategically targets the main streams of the six rivers and their adjoining land-water junction zones, with a particular focus on areas critical for ecological safety and ecologically sensitive and fragile regions. A series of action plans and key ecological protection and restoration projects are set to be implemented comprehensively.

A key part of the initiative focuses on intensifying the ecological protection and restoration in the areas bordering Sichuan and Chongqing. To achieve this, there are plans to implement major projects along the main streams of the Yangtze, Jialing, and Fu Rivers in these adjacent areas. The aim is to develop these projects as a national example of constructing effective cross-regional ecological corridors.

This joint initiative between Chongqing and Sichuan is more than a regional endeavor. It sets an example for ecological conservation and sustainable development on a national scale, offering a blueprint for future environmental projects worldwide.
