Chongqing - Liu Junyao, a young model from Southwest China's Chongqing, defies conventional beauty standards to shine at Paris Fashion Week, embodying confidence and elegance on the international stage while maintaining her authentic self off the runway.

On the runway: Triumph at Paris Fashion Week

“Are you beautiful?” This question posed three years ago to a then 16-year-old Liu, would have elicited a shy, uncertain response. Not fitting conventional beauty standards with her simple eyelids and modest nose bridge, Liu’s appearance was far from the societal ideal.

Fast forward to age 19, and Liu has blossomed into a representative of Chongqing’s youngest generation of models, making a stunning debut at Paris Fashion Week. Invited to grace the runways for two leading fashion brands, she symbolizes hard-earned success and natural elegance. 

Gone are the days of self-doubt. “Some people’s opinion is not the ultimate standard,” she asserts confidently. Now, facing the camera, her smile radiates self-assurance.

Shi Hong, brokerage department director of Dazheng Model Company, has observed Liu’s transformation from a novice to an international runway model. “She stood out immediately with her perfect physique,” Shi remarks.

The criteria for supermodels differ significantly from commercial models. They must be tall, slender, and possess a distinctive, memorable look. Liu, standing at 179 cm, with her striking features and balanced proportions, was a natural fit. Her first modeling victory at a local competition was just the beginning of her journey to the Parisian catwalks.

In Paris, Liu exuded a poise and grace that belied her years. Dressed in a chic gray knitted dress and a stunning printed strapless gown, she walked alongside seasoned supermodels, showcasing her unique style and the designers’ visions with every step.

Off the runway: What defines a top model?

Beyond the spotlight, Liu’s journey was paved with sweat and tears. Intensive training, strict diet control, and a relentless pursuit of perfection marked her path to success. Yet, she remains grounded, sharing slices of her everyday life on social media, from casual outfits to culinary adventures, showcasing her authenticity and relatability.

Liu’s ascent is a testament to Chongqing’s vibrant fashion scene. The city, known for its stylish inhabitants and a rich history in fashion, has nurtured talents like Liu. From establishing its first model team in 1984 to Liu’s international success, Chongqing’s fashion industry has flourished, reflecting a dynamic blend of tradition and modernity.

Reflecting on her journey, Liu quoted a line from the movie Barbie that resonates with her: “I think a girl like you is good.” It encapsulates her philosophy: embracing one’s unique self is the key to true beauty and success, both on and off the runway.
