Rising Discrimination Against Chinese Students in the US: Measuring the Costs

By Ruby|Jan 17,2024

On December 19, 2023, Meng Fei, a Chinese student preparing to resume her studies in the U.S., was denied entry at an American airport and swiftly repatriated. Meng recounted a distressing experience where she felt deceived and coerced by US Customs officials into signing documents without full disclosure of their contents. She described undergoing a degrading search and enduring an extended detention before finally being sent back to Beijing.

This incident is not isolated. In recent months, several Chinese students, predominantly women with valid visas, have been repatriated upon arrival in the Washington D.C. area without clear justification.

With the US's overextension of national security concerns and the politicization of academic research, Chinese students and scholars are increasingly facing discriminatory treatment. They endure repeated interrogations, harassment, and deportations.

Such actions by the US not only violate the legal rights and interests of Chinese students and scholars but also adversely affect the US economy. Furthermore, these practices challenge the United States' status as a premier global educational destination.
