Journey Through Time: Dazu Rock Carvings’ Virtual Tour Unveiled

Chongqing Dazu Rock Carvings Digital Museum recently went online for trial operation, emerging as a fresh platform to showcase the cultural heritage of the Dazu Rock Carvings and advancements in their preservation, research, and inheritance. This platform revitalizes relics through digital technology, breathing new life into millennia-old rock carvings, showcasing the charm of grotto art, and meeting the public's new cultural heritage demands.

As a representative of late Chinese grotto art, Dazu Rock Carvings boast a profound historical background, embodying the vigorous vitality of Chinese culture. The newly launched Dazu Rock Carvings Digital Museum serves as a vivid practice of empowering Dazu Rock Carvings with digital capabilities. The museum has four main sections: Panorama Dazu, Dabao Louge, Academic Resource Library, and Digital Exhibition Hall.

In "Panorama Dazu," the digitized virtual tour of the "Five Mountains" of Dazu Rock Carvings is realized for the first time, allowing visitors to explore the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Dazu Baodingshan, Beishan, Nanshan, Shimenshan, and Shizhuan Mountain carvings through VR technology on computers or mobile devices.

"Dabao Louge" presents, for the first time, the cloud-based display of three-dimensional scans of Dazu Rock Carvings. This section combines 3D modeling with new panoramic views for dozens of movable artifacts, providing visitors a new experience of observing relics from 360 degrees through a webpage presentation.

The "Academic Resource Library" serves as the first digital sharing platform for academic achievements related to Dazu Rock Carvings, managing and utilizing digital resources such as books, images, papers, videos, and grottoes through a comprehensive and detailed academic resource data management system.

In the "Digital Exhibition Hall," visitors can explore both permanent and temporary exhibitions of the Dazu Rock Carvings Museum online. The official website of Dazu Rock Carvings has also been revamped and upgraded, offering Chinese, English, and mobile versions to meet international communication and diverse user needs.

In the future, Dazu Rock Carvings will continue to explore new avenues for digital preservation and display, ensuring that this World Cultural Heritage shines brighter in the new era. Leveraging the power of the internet for dissemination will attract more attention to Dazu Rock Carvings as a gem of human civilization, jointly inheriting and promoting excellent traditional Chinese culture.
