Chongqing's Festive Boom: Consumption Volume Grows by 12.4 Pct During Chinese New Year Holiday

Chongqing - During the 2024 Chinese New Year holiday, Chongqing's consumer market exhibited vibrant and robust momentum, with the city's overall consumption volume witnessing a notable increase of 12.4% over the same period last year. 

This good start to the new year's consumption trends underscores the heightened enthusiasm within Chongqing's culture and tourism sectors, which saw a record-breaking influx of 10.685 million visitors, marking an impressive growth of 104.3%.

Ciqikou Ancient Town and Hongyadong scenic areas emerged as the central urban area's top attractions, drawing 1.303 million and 1.071 million visitors, respectively. The Wulong Karst National Geology Park stood out as the crown jewel among 5A-rated scenic spots, attracting 755,000 tourists with its natural beauty.

Chongqing's districts and business zones launched a series of creative and unique promotional initiatives on the commercial front, successfully energizing the Chinese New Year's consumption dynamics. Highlights included the Yuzhong District's "Light and Shadow New Chongqing" extravaganza, the 2024 Yuzhong New Year Consumer Festival, and festive activities along Guanyinqiao Pedestrian Street in Jiangbei District, as well as New Year Shopping Festival events in Shapingba and Jiulongpo Districts, all of which significantly boosted consumer spending.

The city's cultural and tourism events also captivated audiences, with 313 varied performances attracting around 93,100 attendees and art museums welcoming approximately 56,800 visitors. The generous offering of free access to 42 public libraries and 41 cultural centers drew 1.9786 million individuals eager to immerse themselves in cultural pursuits and literary atmospheres, reflecting the residents' profound appreciation for cultural enrichment.

Moreover, Chongqing's commercial complexes and major shopping centers adeptly harnessed this festive period, drawing crowds with immersive shopping experiences and enticing promotional deals. The central urban area's five major shopping districts, including Jiefangbei, Guanyinqiao, Yangjiaping, Nanping, and Shapingba, saw a year-on-year consumption surge of 15.1%. Additionally, the city hosted over 70 special exhibitions and more than 110 social and educational activities, attracting upwards of 1.8 million visitors, an 81% increase from the previous year. Over 120 activities centered around intangible cultural heritage engaged more than 300,000 participants, significantly enriching the festive atmosphere for locals and visitors alike.

During the Chinese New Year holiday 2024, Chongqing's consumption market demonstrated formidable growth, captivating countless residents and tourists while infusing the city's economic landscape with renewed vigor. Looking ahead, Chongqing is set to exploit its distinctive cultural and tourism assets further, unveiling an array of high-quality cultural tourism offerings. This strategic move aims to boost the city's allure to tourists and amplify its cultural impact, inviting an even broader audience to experience the unique charm of Chongqing.
