Fengdu Unveils Spectacular Three-dimensional Light and Shadow Performance Along Yangtze River

By ZHENG KANG|Feb 27,2024

Chongqing - On the Lantern Festival, the fifteenth day of the first month of the Chinese lunar calendar, Fengdu County in Chongqing hosted a grand three-dimensional light and shadow show along the Yangtze River, using the starry sky as its canvas and the Yangtze River as its stage. Dragons and phoenixes danced together, symbolizing national prosperity and people's well-being, presenting a spectacle that embodies the traditional blessing culture of Fengdu through light and shadow landscapes.

The opening light and shadow show illuminated the space on both sides of the river, creating an immersive atmosphere of blessings and showcasing the new vitality of New Fengdu through light and shadow. Two thousand twenty-four drones formed the words "Come to Fengdu for blessings and have a lifetime of peace" above the river's surface. Hundreds of prayer drums resounded, thousands of peace lanterns ascended into the sky, and tens of thousands of prayer candles were lit, creating a dazzling display of fireworks in the night sky of Fengdu County. It was like a real-life epic three-dimensional light and shadow film, bringing a visual and auditory feast imbued with Fengdu's blessing culture to the general public and tourists alike.

This light and shadow show is also one of the important activities of the second Fengdu Blessing Culture Festival. This year's Blessing Culture Festival is rich in content and offers a fully immersive and interactive experience. The organizers distributed 50,000 limited edition "福" character stickers and 20,000 blessing candles for free to citizens and tourists, bringing the blessings of the year to everyone and allowing them to feel the warmth and joy of the festival.

Fengdu, located in the geographical center of Chongqing and the heart of the Three Gorges Reservoir Area, has a long history and profound cultural heritage. It is known as the "Ghost City of 1000 Years, County Town of 2000 Years, and Phoenix City of 5000 Years". The Fengdu Temple Fair began in the Western Jin Dynasty (265-316) and peaked in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). In 2014, the "Fengdu Temple Fair" successfully entered the fourth batch of the national intangible cultural heritage list, becoming a window to showcase the unique folk culture of the East.
