By ZHAN CHEN|Mar 26,2024

Chongqing - "We are excited to bring our students to Chongqing for the internship, with the first group starting in July of this year," Marcus Wong, programme manager of the National University of Singapore (NUS) Overseas Colleges (NOC), told the reporter on March 21.

Initiated in 2002, the NOC program sent its first group of students to Silicon Valley. Two decades later, it now encompasses more than 20 cities globally, such as Beijing, Ho Chi Minh City, Israel, Jakarta, Munich, Nagoya, New York, Toronto, Shenzhen, Stockholm, and others.

During their internships, students can work closely with entrepreneurial leaders and receive mentorship to achieve company goals. Beyond their work commitments, students can attend classes at partner universities and immerse themselves in the local startup ecosystems.

Students to undertake six-month internships in Chongqing

Wong shared that the new program schedule will start in Chongqing by July 2024, specifically for sophomore and junior students who are passionate about entrepreneurship.

The program covers a wide range of majors, including computer science, engineering, finance, business administration, and economics. Two groups of students undertake six-month internships annually.

"We are particularly interested in Chongqing's strengths, such as electric vehicles, energy, and advanced manufacturing," Wong noted. "It offers a distinct perspective compared to other Chinese cities."

Additionally, Wong highlighted that the industries in Chongqing presents major opportunities for students to intern in startups and even the innovation teams in large corporations.

NUSRI Chongqing for Tech Incubation and Innovation

Leveraging the China-Singapore (Chongqing) Demonstration Initiative on Strategic Connectivity (CCI), NUS established its Chongqing Research Institute (NUSRI CQ) at the Liangjiang New Area in 2019, marking the university's second research institute in China.

Utilizing NUS's research capabilities and global resources across a wide range of fields, NUSRI CQ aims to establish high-end research platforms focusing on advanced materials and manufacturing, information engineering and artificial intelligence, modern logistics, as well as finance and risk management in western China.

NUSRI Chongqing is also set to enhance the development of research talent by offering NUS Ph.D. programs and research opportunities to exceptional young researchers and professionals in the region, catering to their scientific and professional educational needs.

Aligned with the goals and directions of the CCI, the third state-level cooperative project between the Singapore and China governments, NUSRI Chongqing will serve as a hub for high-tech industry incubation, facilitating technology transfer, entrepreneurship, and innovation-related activities.
