With a planned area of 1,198 square kilometers, the Western (Chongqing) Science City comprises a core area and five districts. The core area, known as the Western Science City Chongqing High-Tech Industrial Development Zone, covers an area of 316 square kilometers, while the five districts - Shapingba, Jiulongpo, Beibei, Jiangjin, and Bishan - span a total area of 882 square kilometers. It is home to 28 universities, including Chongqing University and Southwest University, and serves as the starting point of the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor.

As the core area of the Western (Chongqing) Science City, the Chongqing High-Tech Industrial Development Zone serves as a key area for the construction of a nationally influential scientific and technological innovation center and a comprehensive scientific center in the Chengdu-Chongqing region. It also serves as an important engine for implementing national strategies and building a modernized new Chongqing.

The Chongqing High-Tech Industrial Development Zone has initially developed leading industries and industry clusters with distinctive advantages, including 200 billion yuan ($27.7 billion) level new-generation smart terminals, 20 billion yuan level software information, 20 billion yuan level intelligent connected new energy vehicles and core components, and ten billion yuan level integrated circuits.

It is developing specialized parks such as the national bio-industry base, the national high-tech service industry aggregation zone for inspection and testing, and the Jinfeng Software Park. The import and export value of the Chongqing Xiyong Comprehensive Bonded Zone accounts for over 40 percent of the city's total.

The Chongqing High-Tech Industrial Development Zone has established high-level scientific and technological innovation platforms, such as the National Center for Applied Mathematics and the Jinfeng Laboratory.

There are 342 science and technology innovation platforms at or above the municipal level in the zone, including 22 national-level platforms (6 of which are national key laboratories). Seven national incubators and innovation spaces also foster 402 national high-tech enterprises.
