Foreign Enterprise and Expert Bullish on Chongqing's Sci-Tech Innovation Path

By RAN ZHENG|Apr 03,2024

Chongqing - With China targeting a significant output of 10 trillion yuan (USD 1.38 trillion) in the new materials industry by 2025, Chongqing is strategically aligning itself with comprehensive plans to capitalize on the potential of advanced materials.

Chongqing's districts, such as Jiulongpo and Qijiang, prioritize the light alloy industry, while Dadukou and Changshou strive to improve glass fiber composite materials. Fuling and Wanzhou also contribute to the development of synthetic materials. This diversified strategy underscores Chongqing's tailored approach to modern manufacturing and exemplifies the cultivation of new quality productive forces.

The advanced materials sector is pegged as a driver for various industries under the "33618" modern manufacturing cluster system, representing a cornerstone among the trillion-level leading industrial clusters.

Chongqing's growth strategy includes transforming scientific research into tangible industrial progress. Last year's unveiling of four innovation platforms, including the China (Chongqing) Natural Gas Chemical New Materials Research Institute, marks a significant step towards harnessing scientific achievements for industrial development.

The 7th Forum of Materials Genome Engineering, held in Chongqing last December, transformed the city into a focal point for academic and professional exchanges, covering topics from new energy vehicles to nanotechnology in mobile phones.

As detailed by Paul E. Knutson from Corning Display Technologies, Corning's expansion in Chongqing involves ramping up investment and establishing Chinese mainland's first gorilla glass factory, reflecting its faith in the city's dynamic business scene.

Endorsements from industry experts and academics, such as Zheng Jielian, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and professor at Guangxi University, reinforce the optimism surrounding Chongqing's direction in scientific and technological innovation. With the "416" layout aiming for enhanced central-local cooperation and policy support, Chongqing sets a benchmark for industrial transformation.

Chongqing has focused on building four major science and innovation hubs in intelligent technology, life and health, new materials, and green low-carbon industries. It is actively developing 16 key strategic areas, including artificial intelligence, blockchain, cloud computing, and big data, forming the "416" technology innovation strategy layout. This accelerates the construction of a nationally influential science and technology innovation center.
