Incorporating Chongqing Suppliers into Metro's National Supply Chain | Insights

By ZHAN CHENKENNY DONG|Apr 04,2024

Chongqing - Chongqing has always played a crucial role in our investment strategy, said Tino Zeiske, CEO of Metro Commerce Group Co. Ltd., in an interview with Bridging News on April 2, during the China International Import Expo (CIIE) in Chongqing Investment Promotion.

Since its debut in China in 1996, the prominent German retail giant Metro has expanded to over 60 cities with over 100 stores. Its Chongqing journey began with opening its first store in Nan'an District in 2001. Currently, Metro operates four stores in Chongqing.

"We're happy with the development because Chongqing is famous for consumption," he commented. "That's why our stores enjoy very nice business."

CIIE, a gateway for introducing new products

Metro has consistently participated in the CIIE, the country's largest annual trade fair. "I thought it's a good opportunity to come and mingle with the organizers and the Chongqing government," Zeiske said.

He believes the CIIE serves as a significant gateway for introducing new products. "Every year, we bring over 100 new items to CIIE and showcase fresh products from Europe, New Zealand, and other countries."

Zeiske praised the Chongqing government's support and reiterated Metro's dedication to local development. This involves strengthening cooperation with Chongqing to integrate local suppliers into Metro's national supply chain, aiming to deliver high-quality, fresh products to consumers more efficiently.

"With over 30 million residents in Chongqing, there's ample opportunity for expansion," he observed. Although there isn't a detailed plan, Metro saw tremendous potential for future growth in the city.

Metro has enhanced its logistics network in Chengdu, Chongqing

With over 25 years of presence in China, Metro remains active. Zeiske underscores the significance of innovation, mainly as Chinese consumers show a growing interest in new and healthier taste experiences.

Focusing on strategy in southwest China, Metro views the relationship between Chongqing and Chengdu as crucial, with Zeiske stating that having a "solid supply chain is essential."

To this end, Metro has enhanced its logistics network by coordinating efforts in Chengdu, Chongqing, and other western China regions. He explained that this strategy ensures they can quickly deliver fresh, high-quality products to their customers.

Zeiske also noted that the Chinese government prioritizes the quality of life over quantity. This aligns with Metro's goal to introduce more supply chain solutions in the region, aiming to improve the quality of products available to consumers.
