N'Djamena, Chongqing Strengthen Bonds Across Continents | Sister Cities

By YAN DENG|May 10,2024

Chongqing - In recent years, Chongqing has seized the opportunity to accelerate building the city into a Center for International Exchanges in Central and Western China, continuously integrating and expanding foreign affairs resources.

The city has increased efforts to invite foreign entities and expand its presence globally. As a result, Chongqing's international network has grown, fostering broader exchanges with sister cities, solidifying partnerships, and paving the way for a wider path of friendship.

Nestled in the heart of Central Africa, the Republic of Chad is a pivotal nation within the continent's interior. Among its many ties, its capital city, N'Djamena, has shared a special bond with Chongqing, China, as a sister city since October 12, 2021.

N'Djamena, the bustling capital, boasts of being Chad's largest industrial hub and a vital transportation nexus. It also serves as a cultural and educational epicenter and is emerging as a burgeoning tourist destination. Its historical significance dates back to ancient times when it served as a crucial trading post on the southern edge of the Sahara Desert.

Before the formalization of the sister city relationship between Chongqing and N'Djamena, the President of Chad and Chad's Ambassador to China, Matina Junebé, had previously visited Chongqing. Officials from both central and local governments, as well as representatives from businesses in N'Djamena, had also engaged in exchanges and training in Chongqing, laying a solid foundation for the cities to unite.

The memorandum of understanding signed between Chongqing and N'Djamena on April 25, 2019, laid the groundwork for cooperative efforts across various domains, including economic, technological, medical, educational, cultural, and sports exchanges, paving the way for the formal agreement inked online on October 12, 2021, between Chongqing and N'Djamena to deepen cooperation.

From November 5 to 9, 2023, the Mayor of N'Djamena visited Chongqing to attend the inaugural Belt and Road Science and Technology Exchange Conference. During the visit, the Mayor expressed her commitment to strengthening ties within the Belt and Road framework, expanding collaboration in urban governance, environmental protection, green energy, manufacturing, and modern agriculture, thus ushering in a new chapter of friendly exchanges and cooperation between the two cities.

In January 2024, a delegation from Chongqing reciprocated the visit, engaging in friendly exchanges with the Mayor and exploring local industries and infrastructure. Their participation in the annual Dali Cultural Festival further solidified the deepening friendship between the two cities.
