Trash to Treasure, Chongqing's Unique Path Towards a 'Zero-Waste City'

By JIEYU WANGYILING WANGJAMES ALEXANDER|Jul 09,2024

Chongqing - The prevention and control of solid waste pollution play a vital role in promoting ecological civilization. A new development philosophy is guiding ever more cities towards eco-friendly ways of life and work through zero-waste initiatives.

In this video, iChongqing's presenter, James Alexander, highlighted Chongqing’s efforts in adopting the zero-waste concept. A zero-waste city doesn't mean no waste is produced. It focuses on minimizing landfill waste, maximizing resource utilization, and harmless disposal. This advanced urban management model promotes source reduction and environmental impact minimization.

Designated as a pilot city for the zero-waste initiative by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment of China in 2019, Chongqing has made significant progress over the past five years. One notable example is the Xiajiaba Smart Solid Waste Logistics Transfer Port in Yubei District, which processes 400 tons of kitchen waste daily from six districts. The waste undergoes sorting and is sent to various treatment plants, ensuring maximum resource utilization and minimal environmental impact.

Community involvement is also key to the success of this initiative. The Xinde Mingju Residential Compound in Jiulongpo District features an eco-station with smart waste sorting facilities. Thanks to automated systems, residents can dispose of recyclables, hazardous waste, food waste, and residual waste without touching the bins. This eco-station has transformed a previously dirty area into a clean, green facility, improving the surrounding environment and reducing pollution.

Since 2021, Chongqing's downtown area has achieved full incineration of raw domestic waste with zero landfill. The city has established 330 green factories and 28 industrial parks in the industrial sector. Additionally, Chongqing has set up 1,500 "waste-free points" across various daily life sectors.

Chongqing continues to promote the construction of a zero-waste city and share its experiences with other cities, contributing to the broader goal of a beautiful, sustainable China.
