Chongqing Introduces AI Agriculture Model for Digital New Farmers

By HUXIN LUO|Jul 18,2024

Chongqing - Recently, the Shanghai Jiao Tong University Chongqing Institute of Artificial Intelligence (Institute) introduced an artificial intelligence (AI) agriculture model designed for digital new farmer scenarios. The model addresses crop cultivation methods, policy interpretation, and training agricultural skills.

The model is primarily used in AI digital scenarios tailored for new farmers, including knowledge Q&A, policy interpretation, and skills training for agricultural practitioners. It leverages high-quality multimodal data from agricultural images and videos to tackle critical challenges in the agricultural sector effectively.

Qi Peng, Director of the Institute's AI Large Model Center, explained that they have integrated digital resources to meet the primary needs of agricultural practitioners in crop cultivation. Through aggregating pertinent agricultural knowledge and information, they developed a multimodal intelligent agricultural model that offers Q&A support for practitioners.

Furthermore, the model conducts thorough analyses of agricultural policy documents, aiding agricultural practitioners in swiftly comprehending their essence and forecasting potential impacts on agricultural production, income, and markets.

It also provides online agricultural courses that evaluate practitioners' skills and knowledge to improve their professional proficiency. Qi mentioned ongoing collaborations with institutions like the Chongqing Academy of Agricultural Sciences for internal testing of the model.

Built on Chongqing's inaugural independently developed large language model, this model harnesses billions of tokens developed through pre-training, fine-tuning, and reinforcement learning. The Institute prioritizes strategic planning for emerging industries in Chongqing, emphasizing fundamental AI research and key areas like AI models, healthcare, and pharmaceuticals. This initiative aims to establish an AI industry platform to bolster regional development.

While China's initial position in AI + Agriculture development was not leading, its growth has been remarkably rapid. Presently, China faces a substantial decline in rural labor. Nonetheless, integrating artificial intelligence with drones and driverless vehicles can rapidly generate value, effectively alleviating labor shortages in rural areas and fostering rural revitalization in China.

For instance, DJI, a Chinese drone manufacturer, has developed agricultural drones with AI sensors and imaging technology. These drones monitor crops, assess plant health, and optimize pesticide and fertilizer use, boosting agricultural efficiency and productivity while cutting labor costs and environmental impact.

In the future, the model will be further applied in various scenarios, including governance and livelihood, empowering rural agriculture, and ushering in a new era of AI+ agriculture applications.
