Chongqing - In May 2024, Michael Crook, son of the esteemed Isabel Crook, returned to Bishan, Chongqing, to honor the profound bonds his mother forged with the region. Isabel, a renowned international communist, anthropologist, and educator, dedicated the prime of her life to China, establishing a profound connection with Bishan. During this visit, iChongqing interviewed Michael in Bishan.
In 1940, Isabel engaged in a rural development project in Xinglong Chang (now Daxing Town in Bishan), visiting approximately 1,500 households and meticulously documenting the villagers' lives. These records have since become invaluable historical archives. In 2019, Isabel received China's highest honor for foreign nationals, the Friendship Medal of the People's Republic of China, and was also named an "Honorary Citizen of Bishan District, Chongqing." Her life was intricately intertwined with the Chinese people, and her selfless dedication and invaluable contributions to Bishan have created a warm and touching legacy of heartfelt connections.
In the video, Michael Crook remarked, "I came here not only to trace my mother's memories but also to witness the tremendous changes in rural China." Through Michael's perspective, we witness the profound impact Isabel had in China, particularly in Bishan, and her spirit will forever be etched in the hearts of the Chinese people.
