Chongqing, known for its light rail through buildings, "8D" cityscape, and spicy hotpot, offers overseas visitors various payment options. Foreign nationals can use bank cards from their home countries by looking for UnionPay, Visa, MasterCard, or other card network logos at cashier points. If these logos aren't displayed, they should ask if foreign bank cards are accepted.
To get CNY cash, use foreign bank cards with the relevant logos at ATMs. Foreign currency can also be exchanged at bank branches, qualified financial institutions, or self-service machines.
Foreign visitors can also set up mobile payments by downloading and registering on apps like Alipay, WeChat Pay, or UnionPay. After linking an overseas bank card, they can pay cashless by scanning a QR code. China is also testing identity verification exemptions for payments under USD 2,000.
Foreign nationals in Chongqing can open a bank account with valid identification, such as passports or permanent resident ID cards.
Visitors can register on the e-CNY app, create a digital wallet with their overseas phone number, and top up using Visa or MasterCard. The remaining balances can be transferred back to their foreign bank cards.
Chongqing’s improved payment services, backed by China’s broader efforts, offer foreign nationals a smooth and convenient experience. Whether exploring the city or enjoying its famous hotpot, paying for their experiences is now easier than ever.
