CBAS Selects Chongqing as HQ for Sustainable Satellite Constellation Program

By HUXIN LUO|Sep 03,2024

Chongqing - On September 2, the Chongqing Municipal Development and Reform Commission, the People's Government of Jiangbei District, Chongqing, and the International Research Center of Big Data for Sustainable Development Goals (CBAS) signed a cooperation agreement to develop the Sustainable Satellite Constellation Program, establish the CBAS Satellite Center, and create the Sustainable Aerospace Information Industry Park.

CBAS will establish Chongqing as the headquarters for the Sustainable Satellite Constellation Program, leveraging the city's strong industrial base to develop a comprehensive satellite constellation aerospace industry system supported by big data.

Located in Jiangbei District, this center will integrate communications, navigation, and remote sensing technologies to boost aerospace information, low-altitude economy, and sustainable development, establishing key scientific infrastructure for global technology.

This synergy enables efficient space information services. Communication satellites relay real-time data from remote sensing satellites, while navigation satellites offer precise positioning, allowing seamless data integration.

This integration boosts satellite efficiency and cuts costs in the aerospace industry. In the low-altitude economy, UAV (drone) management for applications like precision agriculture and smart cities is improved. For sustainable development, it enhances environmental monitoring and management, aiding climate change mitigation and disaster response.

CBAS will utilize Chongqing’s strategic resources to drive innovation in aerospace, big data, and AI, developing the Sustainable Aerospace Information Industry Park. This park aims to create a unified space information industry cluster and establish Chongqing as a key aerospace information hub.

Chongqing’s well-established manufacturing sector provides vital support for the aerospace satellite industry. Recent investments in high-tech industries, such as electronic information and integrated circuits, including Sanan Optoelectronics and STMicroelectronics joint ventures, bolster the city’s capacity for satellite research and production.

Additionally, Chongqing's automobile production reclaimed the top position in China in H1 2024, showcasing its advanced manufacturing standards and offering a model for transitioning aerospace satellite production from custom to assembly line.

CBAS is noted as the world’s first research institution dedicated to utilizing big data, artificial intelligence, and aerospace technologies to support the UN’s 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda. It has already launched the SDGSAT-1, the first scientific satellite for this agenda, and established a high-performance SDG big data platform.
