Tire Industry Trends: "Green Innovation is Now a Necessity, Not a Choice" | Insights

By YUTING CHEN|Sep 10,2024

Chongqing - The tire industry is experiencing a significant shift as environmental sustainability and technological advancements drive change.

In a recent exclusive interview before the 22nd China International Motorcycle Trade Exhibition (CIMAMotor) in Chongqing, Huang Jiamin, Marketing Manager of Sichuan Yuanxing Rubber Co., Ltd., discussed the future of the tire industry, emphasizing green innovation and increasing performance demands as key factors driving these changes.

Huang emphasized that environmental considerations will increasingly influence the industry's future. "Green innovation is no longer a choice but a necessity," Huang said. Tire manufacturers are shifting towards sustainable materials and energy-efficient production processes.

Companies like Yuanxing Rubber are at the forefront of this movement, working to reduce their ecological footprint. Using natural and eco-friendly rubber compounds reduces the environmental impact of conventional rubber while improving recyclability.

"On a per-ton basis, we've successfully reduced pollution by around 20% through the use of these eco-friendly materials," Huang stated proudly.

Another key trend influencing the industry is the growing demand for electric vehicles (EVs) and all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), which require specialized tire performance.

Huang explained, "For electric vehicles, the focus is on low rolling resistance and high wet grip to maximize range and safety." With EVs gaining popularity, tire manufacturers face increasing pressure to innovate in ways that improve energy efficiency and durability.

In the ATV sector, the demand for tires capable of handling rugged terrains is growing rapidly. Huang highlighted that ATV tires have unique performance requirements, such as durability and firm grip on varied surfaces like forests and farmlands.

This market is rapidly growing, especially in Europe, the U.S., and Southeast Asia, where ATVs are widely used in agriculture and forestry. Consequently, manufacturers need to create specialized products to meet the demands of these regions.

Expanding Global Markets to Southeast Asia, Europe, and the U.S.

As the tire industry looks to diversify and expand its global presence, Southeast Asia is emerging as a key region for growth.

Huang highlighted Thailand, Vietnam, and Indonesia as key markets due to their natural rubber resources and expanding consumer base.

"These regions offer significant opportunities, both as suppliers of essential raw materials and as emerging markets for tire exports," Huang explained.

Yuanxing Rubber is pursuing partnerships and investments in Southeast Asia to support its international expansion, aligning with the industry's focus on high-growth markets for global diversification.

"We are looking to tap into the rich natural resources and expand our market reach in these regions," said Huang.

Yuanxing Rubber is also expanding its footprint in more developed markets, such as Europe and the U.S., emphasizing high-performance tires for cars and ATVs.

Huang shared that the company is making significant investments in smart manufacturing and plans to open a new intelligent factory specializing in high-end semi-steel radial and ATV tires by the end of October. This facility aims to enhance production capacity and efficiency to meet the increasing global demand.

By integrating automation and digital technologies, Yuanxing Rubber aims to improve operational efficiency and reduce costs. "Smart factories enable us to respond more quickly to market changes and produce region-specific products," Huang noted. "This shift is crucial for maintaining competitiveness in a rapidly evolving global market."
