Chongqing - Owning pets is a common part of many young people's lives, but a new trend has emerged - keeping rocks as pets. The "pet rock" phenomenon has rapidly gained traction, especially among younger generations.

The topic has already garnered over 2.4 million views on social media as users flock to share their experiences. Many users posted photos of their pet rocks adorned with googly eyes, dressed in outfits, and even receiving "skincare" treatments. What started as a quirky hobby has now become a creative subculture, with people fully embracing the idea of giving personality to inanimate rocks.
One user shared, "Rocks don’t shed, poop, or cause trouble - they just sit and listen quietly. High value for low effort!" Unlike traditional pets, rocks require minimal care, yet they provide a form of emotional support that appeals to busy professionals.
As the demand for pet rocks skyrockets, entrepreneurs have seized the opportunity. On platforms like Taobao, pet rock sales have surged, with August seeing a 246% increase over the previous month. Most buyers are from Shanghai, born after 1995, and 80% are women. Beyond the rocks themselves, a wide array of accessories - including tiny homes, outfits, and even "skincare" products - has emerged.
One shop owner noted that many of her customers are fans of anime and subcultures who enjoy decorating their rocks to resemble favorite characters. Professionals are also joining in, using pet rocks as quiet companions during the workday.
The trend isn’t limited to China. In South Korea, pet rocks are also popular, with young people humanizing their rocks by adding eyes and noses and even having conversations with them. On TikTok, pet rock sales have become a small market, with prices ranging from 6,000 to 10,000 won (about 32 to 53 yuan). Some enthusiasts love the simplicity of pet rocks, which offer low-maintenance companionship. However, others are skeptical about this trend.
Is the rise of pet rocks a sign of rebellion or a creative extension of what it means to have a pet?
Psychological counselor Shen Danming notes that rocks don’t interact like living pets but offer unique benefits. "Rocks are permanent, low-maintenance, and provide emotional companionship. Giving them a cute look and personality is both creative and meaningful, offering aesthetic and emotional value." Shen adds, "For some, pet rocks are like childhood toys. They help manage emotions, relieve stress, and ease loneliness. While temporary, they offer emotional support when needed."
Another psychological counselor Wang Lan says rocks often symbolize a person’s inner self. "For many, caring for a pet rock reflects personal interests and self-expression. In today’s fast-paced world, pet rocks help stabilize emotions and promote inner peace." Wang also cautions that while pet rocks provide emotional relief, they shouldn’t replace real human connections. "Social relationships are key to reducing loneliness. True fulfillment comes from interacting with the world and others."
