Calling on German automotive companies to invest in Chongqing | Insights

By SHIHAN YANGYAN DENGYINGZHU CHEN|Sep 13,2024

Chongqing - During the 2024 Belt and Road Journalists Forum, Bridging New sat down with Moritz Lohmann, Co-founder of "Hamburg Welcomes You" GbR, Germany. Lohmann shared his recent experiences and insights on Chongqing and the broader implications of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) for China-Germany relations.

Lohmann recounted his amazement at Chongqing's transformation since his last visit ten years ago. "The city has changed dramatically," he noted, highlighting how the once-gray landscape has evolved into a vibrant tapestry of colors illuminated by neon lights. This revitalization, he believes, mirrors the dynamic progress happening throughout China.

A key topic of the discussion was the role of the Belt and Road Initiative in enhancing bilateral ties between China and Germany. Lohmann emphasized that the BRI is about economic development and creating new opportunities for cultural and business exchanges. He pointed out that while Germany benefits from the initiative, there remains untapped potential for deeper collaboration.

Lohmann expressed concern that Germany has not fully embraced the BRI's opportunities. He proposed that increased use of the BRI could foster mutual understanding and cooperation between the two countries. "If Germany were more engaged, it could lead to a stronger, more reciprocal relationship," he said.

He also touched upon the strategic importance of Chongqing as a burgeoning hub for German investments. With China's advanced railway system, setting up operations in Chongqing could offer significant advantages over traditional coastal regions. Lohmann encouraged German companies to explore this opportunity, citing Chongqing's potential for growth and development.

In closing, Lohmann highlighted the essential role of media in bridging gaps and fostering dialogue between nations. He urged media institutions to support and amplify bilateral exchanges, promoting a more nuanced understanding of each other's cultures and business landscapes.
