Chongqing - Jorah Kai Wood has embraced adventure since moving to Chongqing in 2014. Over the past ten years, he has taught at Chongqing Foreign Language School, captivating his students by weaving cultural elements into his lessons. In addition to teaching, Wood is a prolific writer, publishing eight novels under the name Jorah Kai in the West and Wang Kai in China. His works, inspired by his life in China, blend non-fiction - exploring his personal experiences - with fiction that imagines new worlds, resonating with readers both locally and internationally.
Wood’s time in China has profoundly influenced his views on family and community - values deeply rooted in Chinese culture. His connection to Chongqing runs deep, describing the city as a vibrant fusion of modern innovation and rich tradition, akin to a "cyberpunk dreamscape."
"Chongqing has offered so many opportunities for adventure - to experience a new culture, learn Chinese, and think from a Chinese perspective. It’s given me an understanding of the importance of family and community in a way that differs from the Canadian or Western viewpoint. It's truly been the adventure of a lifetime," he shared. From the fiery hotpot that almost overwhelmed him upon arrival to his fascination with local intangible heritage, like the Tongliang dragon dance, Wood’s journey has transformed China into a lifelong adventure.
Beyond writing and teaching, Wood plays an active role in promoting Chongqing’s culture and tourism, helping to bridge the gap between China and the West. He views China’s rapid development in green energy and technology as a prime example of its leadership in the global movement toward sustainability. In his eyes, the Belt and Road Initiative symbolizes China's pivotal role in shaping the future of international relations.
For Wood, China is more than just a place - it’s a source of endless inspiration and discovery. Every experience deepens his understanding and connection, fueling his creativity and passion for sharing stories that bridge cultures.
