Chongqing - Chongqing's Wanzhou is emerging as a major transport hub in Southwest China, integrating rail, road, water, and air networks, announced Li Qing, Deputy Secretary of the Wanzhou District Committee of the Communist Party of China and District Mayor, at an October 16 press conference.
Major projects like the Chengdu-Dazhou-Wanzhou, Chongqing-Wanzhou, and Xi'an-Chongqing high-speed rails are nearing completion, with future links planned for Wanzhou-Qianjiang and Wanzhou-Zhangjiajie.
Li stated that Wanzhou is accelerating its growth as a comprehensive national transportation hub and key sub-center of Chongqing. It aims to surpass 200 billion yuan ($2.816 billion) in gross domestic product (GDP) and reach a population of two million by 2027.
By 2027, Wanzhou will be a vital link between northeastern Chongqing and key economic regions, with significantly reduced travel times: 30 minutes to Wanzhou-Dazhou-Kaizhou, one hour to Yichang, two hours to Xi'an and Wuhan, and three hours to Zhengzhou. By 2030, trips to Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou will take just five hours.
Wanzhou's logistics capabilities are also strengthening. Xintian Port on the upper Yangtze River uses river-sea intermodal transport and has established a mineral shipping route to Africa. African minerals can now be shipped directly to Wanzhou at an average cost of just 50 yuan per ton.
Wanzhou plans to establish "dry ports" in Xi'an and Lanzhou to boost cargo efficiency and stimulate growth in the regional logistics sector.
Li added that Wanzhou will continue to leverage the synergies of its free trade zone and bonded zone by streamlining customs procedures, optimizing cross-border trade services, and striving to become a key hub of openness in Southwest China.
To meet its 200 billion yuan GDP target, Wanzhou will rely on its advanced manufacturing sector and specialty agricultural product processing industry to cultivate and expand a group of leading enterprises.
Li noted that Wanzhou's advanced materials industry has surpassed 30 billion yuan, with two companies—Chongqing Jiulong Wanbo New Material Technology and GD Copper—each generating over 10 billion yuan. By 2027, the district aims to grow the sector to over 50 billion yuan, with five companies exceeding 10 billion yuan in revenue, including two surpassing 20 billion yuan.
Wanzhou is also working to boost population growth by enhancing urban functions and public services. The district aims to urbanize its agricultural population and expand its capacity to accommodate more residents. Education, healthcare, and transportation improvements will play a key role in attracting young talent to settle and grow their careers in Wanzhou.
