Qijiang's Motorcycles Find Markets in Southeast Asia, Europe, and South America via ILSTC

By HUXIN LUO|Oct 22,2024

ChongqingQijiang is developing the Chongqing-Guizhou Integrated Service Area of the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor (ILSTC), leveraging export industry growth and strategic geographic and transportation advantages, said Gong Rui, member of the Standing Committee of Communist Party of China (CPC) Qijiang District Committee and Executive Deputy District Mayor of Qijiang District Government, at a recent press conference.

Qijiang, located on the Chongqing-Guizhou border, is known as a "brilliant pearl" of the region. It boasts China’s largest Ficus virens group, the birthplace of the country's first auto transmission, and Southwest China's largest coal industry base.

Qijiang’s motorcycle industry continues to expand as an export sector. Exports reached 398 million yuan (USD 55.90 million) from January to September, with 72,000 units produced. Sources reveal that Qijiang’s motorcycles are mainly exported to Southeast Asia, Europe, and South America through the ILSTC.

Deng Shun, Director of the Enterprise Services Department at Chongqing Qijiang High-tech Industrial Development Zone, noted that the growth of Qijiang's motorcycle industry heavily relies on the gear industry. The transmission, built from gears, is a key component of the motorcycle's power system.

Yin Guoxi, Secretary of CPC Qijiang District Committee, said, "Qijiang has been designated as a national demonstration zone for high-quality gear development in China." According to Qijiang statistics, gear production reached 42,000 tons from January to September.

It is noted that Qijiang Gear Transmission Co. Ltd., a representative enterprise in Qijiang's gear production sector, holds over 80% and 40% market share, respectively, in the high-end luxury bus market and the medium and large bus market in China.

Gong highlighted Qijiang's superior geographical and transportation advantages, noting it as the shortest route for Chongqing to access the sea and connect with ASEAN, making it the first entry point from the south.

Qijiang features an efficient transport network with extensive dedicated railway resources, ensuring all industrial parks are linked to rail and road transport. It has multiple expressways, such as the Lanzhou-Haikou Expressway, and major rail lines, such as the Chongqing-Guiyang High-speed Railway. It has also launched cross-border rail and road services to Laos.

According to Gong, in the first half, the volume and value of goods transported via ILSTC in Chongqing Qijiang District increased by 10% and 12.3%, respectively, year-on-year. Additionally, ILSTC goods transport reached 48.15 TEU containers, valued at 18.25 million yuan. The rise in freight volume and value highlights Qijiang's active role as a key node in the ILSTC.
