Chongqing - Davide Liu, a data scientist and passionate Spartan Race athlete, leads a dual life in Chongqing, blending advanced technology with extreme physical endurance.
Originally from Italy, Davide moved to China in 2019 to study computer science at Tsinghua University. After graduating in 2021, he worked in Beijing for two years before relocating to Chongqing, attracted by both his girlfriend and the city's perfect terrain for his athletic training.
Balancing two contrasting lifestyles isn't easy. By day, Davide analyzes financial data and develops machine learning algorithms, staying at the forefront of AI research. "I love the creativity in finding new ways to analyze data," says Davide.
Outside of work, Davide embraces intense physical challenges. In 2021, he discovered a passion for running, which led him to the Spartan Race, a demanding obstacle course that tests physical and mental endurance.
Chongqing's steep hills and mountainous terrain provide Davide with the perfect training ground for Spartan races. Known as a "mountain city," its landscape offers natural challenges similar to those in Spartan competitions.
"You can combine bodyweight exercises with trail running, which is the best preparation for the Spartan Race," he said.
In addition to his own athletic goals, Davide is passionate about promoting the Spartan Race in Chongqing. "Every weekend, I see more people coming to our gym, eager to learn about Spartan Race. Our goal is to build a strong community here," he said.
"In Italy, training usually focuses on shorter distances, like 800 to 5,000 meters on flat tracks," Davide explained. "In Chongqing, however, trail running and outdoor sports are more common." He also noticed that elderly people in China are more active, often practicing tai chi or dancing in public squares, unlike in Italy.
Looking ahead, Davide plans to stay in Chongqing, advancing his career in data science while continuing to pursue his passion for Spartan Race. "Two years ago, I never thought I could win a national championship, and I did. Now, my goal is to place in the top three at the world championships," he said confidently. With Chongqing as his base, Davide is determined to continue pushing the boundaries -- both in AI and on the racecourse.
