Chongqing - Huawei has recently taken a significant step by launching HarmonyOS NEXT, marking it as China's first independently developed operating system. In an exclusive interview with Bridging News, product manager Peng Haiyang shared insights into its innovative features.
Peng described HarmonyOS NEXT as the most substantial upgrade since the introduction of HarmonyOS, characterizing it as a "native" transformation. This new version enhances five core areas: native precision, native connectivity, native intelligence, native security, and native smoothness.
"Compared to earlier versions, this represents a groundbreaking shift from 0 to 1," he stated and emphasized three standout features: content feeding, recognition and conversation, and cross-device copy and paste.
Previously, opening an all-English document meant translating externally to understand it. With a simple long press and drag to the navigation bar, the system instantly translates the text into Chinese, delivering a clear summary for faster access to essential information.
Another highlight feature is cross-device copy and paste, as HarmonyOS Next is designed for seamless interconnectivity across devices.
If you're working on a document and need a snippet from a webpage on your phone, just select and copy it. Then, switch to your tablet, open a new note, long-press, and paste—the content transfers instantly. This quick process saves time, streamlining tasks and boosting productivity.
"Since HarmonyOS NEXT is a completely new system, we are working closely with various ecosystem partners to develop synchronized applications," Peng explained. The official version will be released soon, aiming to deliver a more comprehensive consumer experience.
Initially launched in August 2019, HarmonyOS is an open-source operating system that has since surpassed iOS to become the second-largest mobile operating system in the Chinese market. HarmonyOS NEXT is the fifth iteration of the system, which has already been installed on over 1 billion devices.
