China's First Successful Robotic-Assisted Pulmonary Surgery Using AI, AR Conducted in Chongqing

By YUTING CHEN|Nov 05,2024

Chongqing - In a recent landmark development, the University-Town Hospital of Chongqing Medical University and Chongqing FDIM Technology Co., Ltd. have successfully completed China's first robotic-assisted complex pulmonary segment resection utilizing artificial intelligence and augmented reality technologies in thoracic surgery.

The surgery was performed on a 62-year-old patient with early-stage lung cancer. During the procedure, the thoracic surgical team employed advanced augmented reality (AR) technology developed by Chongqing FDIM Technology. Using a head-mounted display, the lead surgeon was presented with a three-dimensional holographic image of the patient's lung structures, akin to having "X-ray vision" to locate and analyze the tumor precisely.

This innovative technology addresses the limitations of traditional chest CT images, which are constrained by their two-dimensional representations. Surgeons can now intuitively and spatially observe the tumor's location, morphology, and relationship to surrounding vascular and bronchial structures.

The surgery lasted just 45 minutes, significantly less than the time typically required for comparable procedures. During the operation, MR glasses transformed the patient's preoperative CT data into a three-dimensional hologram "floating" in the operating room, enabling the lead surgeon to navigate the surgical pathway in real-time.

When surgical instruments approached critical areas, the imaging system provided automatic prompts to prevent accidental cuts or omissions. This approach not only reduces the risk of damage to healthy tissues but also enhances the overall safety and precision of the surgery.

Additionally, integrating robotic assistance allowed the surgeon to control every step of the procedure meticulously. The flexibility and stability of the robotic arms significantly improved the minimally invasive outcomes, maximizing the preservation of the patient's lung function. The patient recovered well and got out of bed on the same day of the surgery. The frozen section and final pathological results confirmed the diagnosis of minimally invasive adenocarcinoma, indicating the surgery's curative effectiveness.

Chongqing FDIM, a technology innovation enterprise located in the Western (Chongqing) Science City, has established extensive collaborations with universities and research institutions, including Chongqing Medical University. These partnerships leverage academic institutions' robust research capabilities to provide substantial technical support and a solid theoretical foundation for the company.
