Dazu Rock Carvings Exhibition Debuts in Peru

By ZHENG KANG|Nov 08,2024

Lima, Peru – On November 6, the "The Exquisite Rock Carvings Can Tell" exhibition showcasing the Dazu Rock Carvings opened at the Swiss Hotel in Lima, Peru, as part of the China-Latin America Civilizational Dialogue series.

The exhibition features 26 carefully curated images of the Dazu Rock Carvings, with bilingual descriptions in Chinese and Spanish. Highlights include the Thousand-handed and Thousand-eyed Avalokitesvara, Three Worthies of Huayan, and the Wheel of Life, showcasing the intricate beauty of Buddhist sculptures from this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Guests and hotel visitors paused to admire these artistic masterpieces, representing the unique aesthetics of Eastern stonework.

The exhibition also served as a platform for Jiang Siwei, Director of the Dazu Rock Carvings Research Institute, where he praised Latin America’s diverse cultural heritage, including the grandeur of Mayan pyramids and Machu Picchu’s harmony with nature. Jiang highlighted five aspects of Dazu’s artistic and cultural value—local significance, moral grounding, aesthetic appeal, ecological awareness, and intercultural exchange—and extended an invitation to scholars to attend the 2024 International Symposium on Dazu Rock Carvings in Chongqing.

“Dazu represents a unique localization of Buddhist art with distinctly Chinese themes, embodying continuity, creativity, unity, inclusivity, and peace,” Jiang noted. “This exchange has revealed new opportunities for collaboration in heritage preservation with Latin America, from exploring cultural values to advancing conservation techniques.”
