Chongqing - On the evening of November 12, the Chongqing Grand Theatre hosted a concert celebrating the 75th anniversary of Hungary-China diplomatic relations. The Hungarian National Male Voice Choir performed, filling the air with energetic and uplifting melodies that captivated the audience and brought joy to the people of Chongqing.
Hungary, positioned at the crossroads of Eastern and Western civilizations, holds a unique advantage in fostering cultural exchanges with China. The concert marked another milestone in deepening cultural and artistic cooperation between the two nations, helping unlock new potential for collaboration in culture, art, and beyond, paving the way for a broader, mutually beneficial partnership.
The Hungarian National Male Voice Choir, founded in 1949, is the world's second-largest professional male choir, with 45 members. Since its inception, the choir has performed nearly 400 concerts in over 50 countries across four continents, with almost 30,000 performances. It has received numerous prestigious awards, including the Prima Primissima Award, Hungarian Heritage Award (Tradition), Bartók Award, Pásztory Award, and the Charles Cros Academy Record Award.
During the concert, the choir captivated the audience with their heavenly voices, performing classic melodies ranging from Faust and The Magic Flute to Verdi and Kodály Zoltán's classic melodies. The performance beautifully conveyed a sense of timeless friendship and resonance. Notably, the choir's artists began and ended the concert by performing The March of the Volunteers and I Love You, China, prompting the audience to join in a heartfelt sing-along.
The entire concert felt like a serene river of lyrical tunes flowing gently through every corner of the theatre. The music was painted vividly, with moving scenes on each note, evoking deep emotions. The choir's performance was at once tender and passionate, guiding every listener into a dreamlike musical journey.
"The concert was perfect, from the piano playing to the choir's voices!" said Chongqing resident Chen Li, who attended the event. "It allowed me to feel the regional charm of Hungary. Although it was a choir performance, the impact of the music was so direct—sometimes gentle and soothing, sometimes powerful and stirring. It was truly a remarkable experience."
The event was jointly organized by the Hungarian Consulate General in Chongqing, the Liszt Institute – Hungarian Cultural Center Beijing, and the Chongqing Cultural Industry Investment Group.
