Chongqing - On November 22, the 2024 Cup of China, part of the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating, opened in style in Banan, Chongqing, with an array of captivating performances. The first day of this event featured the Ice Dance Rhythm Dance, Women Short Program, Men Short Program, and Pairs Short Program, drawing enthusiastic applause from a packed audience.
In the Ice Dance Rhythm Dance, Italian duo Charlene Guignard and Marco Fabbri mesmerized the crowd with their flawless execution and modern urban-themed performance. Inspired by contemporary dance, their unique costumes and choreography earned them the top spot.
Guignard and Fabbri began skating together in 2010 and are trailblazers in Italian ice dancing. In nearly a decade, they became the first Italian duo to claim the European title and a World Championship medal, securing silver in 2023. Fabbri, who previously competed in singles and achieved notable results, including an 18th-place finish at the 2007 World Junior Championships, transitioned to ice dance to reach greater heights.
Speaking after their performance, Fabbri praised the competition's venue and atmosphere. "Here, since the first practice, we feel at ease. We feel good on the ice. Good temperature. The ring is amazing. It is much easier to perform for the crowd here," he said, reflecting the positive energy surrounding the event.
Chinese skater Zhu Yi shone brightly in the Women's Short Program, delivering a graceful and confident performance. Born September 19, 2002, Zhu represented China at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics and has since emerged as a promising figure skating talent.
After her performance, Zhu shared insights into her preparation and mindset. "Before coming to the Cup of China, I was in Kazakhstan. I brought the relaxed attitude I learned there to this competition, taking it one jump at a time. This time, I felt very relaxed overall," she remarked.
The opening day set the stage for an exciting weekend of competition, with top skaters worldwide showcasing their artistry and athleticism in one of the season's most anticipated events. As the Cup of China unfolds, all eyes will be on the skaters as they vie for podium finishes and crucial points in the Grand Prix series.
Chongqing's stunning backdrop and warm hospitality have already made this edition of the Cup of China memorable, and fans are eagerly anticipating the upcoming performances.
