Chongqing - Over 40 international students from universities in Chongqing immersed themselves in the art of Sichuan opera at the Chongqing Sichuan Opera Theatre on Saturday.
The event, part of the "International Students Chongqing Cultural Arts Journey," allowed students from nearly 20 countries to experience this iconic Chinese art form firsthand.

The day began with a visit to the Chongqing Sichuan Opera Museum, where students were guided through the history and evolution of this ancient art form. A professional guide shared insights into the cultural significance and craftsmanship behind the performance styles and techniques passed down through generations.

The backstage tour was a highlight of the experience. Students watched in awe as actors prepared for the performance. They marveled at the detailed process of applying makeup and creating the distinctive face masks in Sichuan opera. The students also explored the various props, learning about their role in the performance and the intricate craftsmanship involved.
"These colorful and dramatic face paintings are not just decorations; they represent the soul of each character. The different colors and patterns reveal the characters' personalities and destinies, with every brush stroke telling a unique story," said Steven Ampang, an international student from Indonesia.
"From the elaborate costumes to the traditional props, every item tells a tale of ancient Chinese history," added Peng Sinaroth from Cambodia.

When the performance began, the students were immediately transported into the mesmerizing world of Sichuan opera. The performers, dressed in stunning costumes, astounded the audience with their face-changing techniques and dramatic feats, such as breathing fire. Many students eagerly captured the spectacle on their phones, while others sat in awe of the captivating performance. This visual and auditory feast allowed them to experience the unique charm of Sichuan opera and appreciate the cultural richness of Chongqing's diverse arts scene.
"The actors were incredible! Their singing was powerful and emotional, their movements precise and strong. Every gesture, every glance, was full of meaning and energy. I was completely captivated," said Sunday Chiamaka Esther, an international student from Nigeria.

Following the performance, students had the chance to interact with the actors and try some of the basic movements used in Sichuan opera. Selyuk Anna, an international student from Russia, described the experience as "an unforgettable cultural journey. It made me love Chongqing even more and appreciate my time studying here. I can't wait to share everything I've learned with my friends so they can experience this unique charm, too." Other students echoed her enthusiasm, expressing their desire to promote Sichuan opera internationally and become ambassadors of cultural exchange between China and the world.

This event is part of the Chongqing Municipal Commission of Culture and Tourism Development's "Telling the World about Chongqing" initiative, which includes various cultural exchange activities such as "Diplomats Discover Chongqing," "International Travel Agents Explore Chongqing," "Overseas Chinese Experience Chongqing," "International Media Discover Chongqing," "Foreign Enterprises Discover Business Opportunities in Chongqing," and "International Students Experience Chongqing." The initiative aims to foster cultural exchange and mutual appreciation between China and the global community by deepening international students' understanding of Chinese culture.
