By CHANG CHEN|Dec 20,2024

ChongqingIn a major initiative to improve urban living, Chongqing has successfully completed its 2024 goal of constructing 100 pocket parks and renovating 100 existing parks to accommodate both elderly and young residents. These efforts reflect the city’s ongoing commitment to enhancing public spaces and promoting a healthier, more inclusive urban environment.

Bringing green spaces to residents’ doorsteps

Amid the hustle and bustle of city life, pocket parks have emerged as essential green oases, offering residents a quiet retreat. These parks, often located in previously unused urban spaces such as vacant lots and neglected corners, provide a place where citizens can relax and connect with nature.

"Our goal is to ensure that everyone, whether in a busy commercial district or a residential area, can step out of their door and immediately experience green spaces,” said Wang Haomin, an official of Chongqing Urban Management Bureau. "These small but vital ‘urban oxygen bars’ are designed with the community in mind, incorporating local plants and reflecting the city's unique culture."

The new pocket parks have been carefully integrated into existing neighborhoods, with particular attention given to older districts needing urban renewal. By repurposing underutilized spaces near schools, commercial zones, and transport hubs, the city has ensured that these parks are accessible and convenient. Furthermore, each park is designed to highlight the region's local characteristics, fostering a deeper sense of connection for residents.

Meeting diverse needs of all age groups

Pocket parks offer quick access to greenery, while larger urban parks are being revitalized to cater to all age groups. For example, Rongqiao Park in Nan'an District has transformed from a peaceful retreat to a lively family space. Its new children’s playground, complete with slides, swings, and a sandbox, makes the park a popular destination for parents and children alike.

Similarly, Wangjiang Park in Wanzhou District has been renovated with multi-purpose sports areas and fitness equipment. It now provides play, exercise, and relaxation spaces for children, young adults, and seniors.

"We’ve added accessible paths, safety barriers, and playground equipment to ensure the parks are enjoyable for everyone," said Wang. These upgrades not only prioritize physical safety but also aim to encourage social interaction across generations.

At Wuyun Lake Park in Shapingba District, slip-resistant paths and shaded rest areas serve visitors, while low-impact fitness zones cater to seniors. "This reflects our broader goal of promoting well-being for all residents, regardless of age," said Wang.

The city has added life-saving facilities like AED machines and more senior-friendly fitness equipment as part of this initiative. These updates aim to create safer, more comfortable spaces that promote physical activity and social interaction.

Overall, these projects highlight Chongqing’s commitment to developing urban spaces that enhance the quality of life for all residents, from children to the elderly. With continued efforts to improve public spaces, the city is well on its way to becoming a more inclusive and livable urban environment.
