SW China's Chongqing Reveals City Spirit

By ZHAN CHEN|Dec 27,2024

Chongqing - The city spirit of Chongqing Municipality in southwestern China is captured in four words: resilience, valiance, openness, and pioneering, according to Thursday's press conference

City spirit is the unique character that defines a city, reflecting its people's shared values and aspirations. Since March this year, the Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China Chongqing Municipal Committee has refined and shaped this expression of Chongqing's spirit through public consultations, expert discussions, and public voting.

These words are deeply rooted in Chongqing's history, highlight the city's culture, and resonate with the needs of the times. They reflect the collective voice of the city's 32 million residents and embody the wisdom of its leaders and citizens.

This also marks the first time Chongqing has formally defined its city spirit since becoming a municipality directly under the central government.

The first two of "resilience and valiance" answer the question, "Who am I?" while the last two - "openness and  pioneering" address the question, "What will I do?"

"Resilience" reflects Chongqing's ability to thrive despite its challenging geography. Surrounded by mountains and deep gorges, the city has shown perseverance in overcoming natural obstacles, adapting to its environment, and driving continuous development despite physical and economic challenges.

"Valiance" highlights Chongqing's unwavering commitment to its people and principles, particularly during times of crisis. From its role in the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression to other struggles, the city has demonstrated both valiance to its citizens and bravery in the face of adversity.

"Openness" symbolizes Chongqing's welcoming nature as an immigrant city. Over the past 27 years as a municipality directly under the central government, it has evolved into a major inland hub, fostering inclusivity and strengthening connections with both domestic and international communities.

"Pioneering" represents the city's spirit of innovation and willingness to take risks. Whether through technological advancements or economic development, Chongqing has consistently strived to be at the forefront, pushing boundaries to achieve excellence, even in the face of challenges.

With a history spanning 3,000 years, Chongqing has been shaped by six primary cultural influences: Bayu culture, revolutionary culture, Three Gorges culture, the culture of Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, United Front culture, and immigrant culture.

The city spirit draws inspiration and strength from these six cultural pillars. It has emerged not only from the city's rich history and culture but also from the practical needs of its urban development.

Looking ahead, Chongqing is committed to integrating this city spirit into every aspect of its development, encouraging citizens to study and promote the values expressed.
