Empowering Girls in Maasai Mara with Skills for Independent Livelihoods

During Christmas 2024, four students and their parents from KL International School of Chongqing Bashu (KLIS) visited the Namunyak Centre in Kenya. They brought donations from charity auctions, including sanitary pads, underwear, and essentials, along with self-funded gifts like pencils, candies, soccer balls, and their artwork.

The Namunyak Centre, founded in 2019 by Chongqing entrepreneurs Tang Lin and Yuan Lin, supports local girls in need. While running an eco-lodge in Kenya's Maasai Mara, they partnered with a resident, Mary Silantoi, to launch the charity initiative.

In March 2024, the Kenyan government officially recognized the Namunyak Centre by granting it certification and renaming it the Namunyak Community Based Organization.

Xu Yan, a host from Chongqing Traffic Radio and the first Chinese donor to the Namunyak Centre, has played a pivotal role by offering guidance and care to many of the girls. Most of them are in their adolescence and navigating the sensitive stages of growing up.

In addition to the material aid, KLIS has started working on resolving the community's water access challenges. Several parents have supported the school significantly, raising over 40,000 yuan (about 5,480 USD) so far to purchase essential supplies and fund the drilling of a well for the community.

The number of girls receiving support from the Namunyak Centre has grown from just over ten to nearly thirty, with ages ranging from as young as seven to as old as sixteen.

Tang Lin, Coordinator of the Namunyak Community-Based Organization, emphasized that girls face challenges beyond material needs, including the skills required for independence and self-support. Empowering them to live, learn, and earn independently is essential.

"We have to empower them and make them economically independent," said Tang. "In the future, we will continue to bring more education and career training to empower these girls."
