Record-Breaking Winter Tourism in Chongqing: Southeast Asian Visitors Flock to Snowy Fairy Mountain

By CHANG CHEN|Jan 18,2025

Chongqing - The Fairy Mountain Scenic Area in Chongqing Wulong District has become a winter wonderland, drawing over 10,000 visitors daily, including a significant surge in international tourists. The influx is largely driven by the newly launched “Wulong Tourist Pass,” which offers unlimited access to six core attractions for as little as 19.9 yuan.

This season, Fairy Mountain has seen a 193.64% increase in international visitors compared to the same period last year. Tourists from Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand lead the surge, with many arriving unprepared for Chongqing’s unexpectedly cold winter. “Many visitors from Guangdong, Hainan, and Southeast Asia arrive in shorts and T-shirts, not expecting the chill,” said a representative of the scenic area. The park has designated special rooms for guests to change into warmer clothing to accommodate them.

Following several snowfalls, the once lush green meadows of Fairy Mountain have transformed into vast snowfields. Children are seen sledding down gentle slopes, building snowmen, and feeding goats that roam the area, creating a lively winter scene.

Wulong District introduced the “Wulong Tourist Pass” on January 2 to fuel the growing enthusiasm for winter tourism. The pass allows unlimited visits to top attractions. Additionally, a special winter discount pass was introduced for students nationwide, offering scenic area tickets starting from 0 yuan and high-value vouchers, further boosting visitor numbers.

Fairy Mountain’s “most beautiful highway,” a popular attraction for scenic train rides through snowy landscapes, sees over 85% of visitors opting for this experience—amounting to more than 8,500 passengers daily. To manage peak crowds, the park operates 20 small trains along the route and deploys six 50-seat luxury coaches during high-demand periods to minimize wait times to under 20 minutes.

“We recommend the luxury coaches for those seeking a more comfortable ride or who are sensitive to the cold. "

As Wulong District accelerates its development into an internationally renowned tourist destination, the Fairy Mountain Scenic Area continues to attract global visitors. The region’s blend of natural beauty and cultural attractions, combined with strategic marketing and visitor-friendly policies, is solidifying its status as a top winter getaway.

With the success of the winter season and increasing international attention, Fairy Mountain is poised to become a must-visit destination for both domestic and international travelers seeking a unique snow-covered escape.
