By FENG, XIAOLOU|Jan 21,2025

Chongqing - From January 10 to 16, a Chongqing Culture and Tourism delegation visited Nagoya and Iwate in Japan to participate in local New Year's art performances. Following UNESCO's recognition of the Chinese Spring Festival as an "Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity," this journey is a return visit for the delegation to strengthen cultural and tourism exchanges with Japan after participating in a Japanese travel expo in 2024.

The performance venues are saturated with the joyful spirit of the Chinese New Year. The Chongqing Liangjiang Art Troupe captivated Japanese friends and overseas Chinese with songs like "The Sun Comes Out Joyfully" and "Yao Mei's Swagger," full of New Year cheer. The thrilling acrobatics act "Swing Pipe" enchanted everyone on the spot, while the melodious opera "Pear Garden Music" fascinated Japanese opera enthusiasts.

During the performances, the delegation set up a cultural tourism booth showcasing the "Hello! Chongqing" image and distributing tourist maps, brochures, and cultural products, which Japanese attendees warmly received. Themed presentations on the Metropolitan Area, Three Gorges, and Wuling Mountains garnered significant attention from the audience.

Several Japanese friends attending the event expressed their fascination with Chongqing's cyberpunk cityscape, which they had explored online. They eagerly anticipated the resumption of direct flights between Tokyo and Chongqing on January 26, 2025, to explore the "Magic City." They looked forward to experiencing the unique 8D landscape, taking cable cars across rivers, and savoring Chongqing's spicy hot pot.

Chongqing's unique tourism resources have earned accolades from the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) and esteemed travel magazines like Frommer's and Lonely Planet. The city's popularity on social media platforms like YouTube and TikTok has made it a heated destination for foreign tourists. Implementing a 30-day visa-free policy for Japanese visitors and resuming direct flights between Chongqing and Tokyo is expected to boost Japanese tourism to Chongqing significantly.

The Chongqing Municipal Culture and Tourism Commission will focus on key Japanese markets, planning a series of domestic and international cultural and tourism promotion activities. They aim to enhance communication and exchanges with relevant industries in Japan, establish a tourist exchange mechanism, and promote youth study tours between the two countries.
