Malaysia's Firefly Airlines will operate the new route, which will operate one weekly flight using a Boeing 737 starting January 28. The flight schedule is as follows: It departs Kuching every Tuesday at 8:30 p.m. and arrives in Chongqing at 2:00 a.m. the next day (Wednesday). It also departs Chongqing every Wednesday at 3:00 a.m. and arrives in Kuching at 8:30 a.m. The flight duration is approximately 5 hours and 15 minutes.

Tickets are now available for purchase, with initial prices around 1,600 yuan ($221). Passengers can book through the airline's official website or platforms like Ctrip, Fliggy, and Qunar.

Kuching, located on the island of Borneo, is the capital of Malaysia's Sarawak state and the largest city in East Malaysia. It is also a historically significant city with a rich Chinese heritage, including a Chinese Heritage Museum showcasing Chinese immigrants' contributions to the region.

Since December 2023, China and Malaysia have implemented a visa-free policy, leading to a surge in cross-border travel. China has been Malaysia's largest trading partner for several years, while Malaysia is China's ninth-largest trading partner and a key investment and contracting market. 2024 marks the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Malaysia, with increasing exchanges in personnel and trade.

The new route is expected to boost tourism and economic cooperation between Chongqing and Malaysia, contributing to Chongqing's goal of becoming a major international hub in central and western China.

Additionally, Chongqing has recently restored regular flights to Colombo and Male and launched a charter flight to Chiang Mai. Plans are underway to restore direct flights to Tokyo and introduce a charter flight to Koh Samui.
