On January 23, the "Happy Chinese New Year - Intangible Cultural Heritage Gathering" event was held at the Cultural Section of the Chinese Embassy in the UK, officially launching the 2025 UK "Happy Chinese New Year" series. In his speech, Minister Zhao Fei from the Chinese Embassy in the UK stated that the "Happy Chinese New Year" event has been thriving across the UK for a long time, deeply rooted in the "4H" concept (Hope, Home, Harmony, Health), attracting more and more British residents to experience Chinese culture. This year, the "Spring Festival, social practices of the Chinese people in celebration of the traditional New Year" was successfully included in the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, adding an ICH touch to the "Happy Chinese New Year" event. The charm of ICH lies in continuing ancient civilizations and achieving contemporary innovation, while its vitality lies in integrating into people's lives and promoting diverse sharing.

In addition to interactive installations and real-time connections, the event will feature interactive sessions such as the New Year Photo Studio and New Year Post Office, incorporating ICH elements to showcase the diversity and inclusiveness of Spring Festival culture. During the event, residents can take electronic photos with Chongqing's and London's landmarks and New Year themes as backgrounds to share festive greetings or send postcards through mailboxes to convey cross-border New Year wishes to friends and family.
One of the event's highlights is the screen lighting ceremony on February 6, where guests from Chongqing and London will jointly light up the screen, marking the start of the week-long celebration. The ceremony will be broadcast globally through the Western China International Communication Organization's domestic and international platforms. Hosts from Chongqing and London will showcase the exciting performances and interactive activities in both cities to a global audience, allowing them to experience the vibrant atmosphere of the event online in real time.
Regarding this Sino-British joint celebration of the Spring Festival, Mr. Anthony Preston, the HM Consul-General to Chongqing and South West China, remarked, "The Spring Festival provides a valuable opportunity for people to gather and create precious memories together. Such events also offer the Chinese and British people a chance to meet face-to-face, bridging long distances to greet each other and understand each other's cultures and lifestyles."
This time, "Nihao! Let's Meet" 2025 Happy Chinese New Year Celebration follows the successful Sino-British cultural exchanges of the 2023 "Exploring Yummy Chongqing in London" Chongqing food & culture experience tasting event and the 2024 "Where Land Meets Sea - Chinese Dragon Dance in (the) UK" Happy Chinese New Year Celebration which is a part of Chongqing City's cultural promotion in the UK. It will further enhance cultural understanding and friendship between the people of China and the UK, creating shared precious memories and truly highlighting the cultural value of the Spring Festival as a global festival.
