By YUTING CHENHUXIN LUO|Feb 01,2025

Chongqing - On January 29, the first day of Chinese New Year 2025, around 80 overseas Chinese from 10 countries, including Malaysia, Indonesia, Cambodia, and Singapore, gathered in Chongqing’s Changshou District to celebrate the traditional Chinese New Year.

Beneath the warm Winter sun, the overseas Chinese climbed the Wanshou Stone Stairs on Mount Puti, a staircase of 19,999 "longevity" characters and 1,567 steps. They embraced traditional Chinese wellness and longevity culture while praying for prosperity in the coming year.

Sihan Huang, an overseas Chinese, shared that returning to her hometown deepened her connection with local culture and identity. She expressed pride in Chongqing's rich cultural heritage and hopes for its continued preservation and promotion.

International student Emily Huang echoed similar feelings, describing the strong nostalgia she experienced upon returning home. The sight of red lanterns, bustling streets, and the familiar dialect evoked cherished memories.

"We will share the stories of our hometown with the next generation, passing on our culture and reinforcing our emotional connection to it," Huang added.

In addition to visiting Changshou, the overseas Chinese participants also explored other landmarks in Chongqing, such as the Three Gorges Museum, Huguang Guild Hall, and Jinfo Mountain in Nanchuan.

Across Chongqing’s districts, Spring Festival activities have been carefully planned to provide a nostalgic taste of home while immersing participants in the festive atmosphere. These events also serve as a cultural exchange platform, promoting traditional Chinese culture.

This event was hosted by the Chongqing Municipal Commission of Cultural and Tourism Development and the Chongqing Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese, to celebrate the Spring Festival being added to UNESCO's List of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
