By CHANG CHEN|Feb 04,2025

Chongqing - As the Year of the Snake awakens across the world's largest metropolis, Chongqing's different areas are brimming with festive charm, blending rich traditions with vibrant celebrations. Different locations offer unique ways to experience the essence of the Chinese Lunar New Year.

On January 26, the Kaizhou Ancient City officially opened its streets to visitors, recreating the lively charm of old Kaizhou with its traditional market scenes and cultural heritage. The picturesque fusion of ancient architecture and modern "Guochao" (Chinese trend) aesthetics captivated locals and tourists alike. International students in Chongqing joined the festivities, immersing themselves in hands-on experiences such as making tangyuan (sweet rice dumplings), playing traditional bamboo instruments, and admiring golden lion performances. The lively crowd and nostalgic atmosphere made for a truly immersive New Year celebration.

In Banan’s Daojiao 1979 Creative Art Community, an old red-brick factory has been transformed into a hub of New Year festivities, where the rustic charm of the past meets the vibrant hues of Chinese New Year decorations. Visitors explored various interactive zones, from crafting paper lanterns to selecting hand-written Spring Festival couplets. The atmosphere was brimming with joy as families and friends engaged in traditional games such as rolling iron hoops, shuttlecock kicking, and pot throwing. The entire square buzzed with laughter, echoing the deep-rooted customs of the holiday.

Shibati, one of Chongqing’s most historic neighborhoods, hosted the reunion feast, inviting locals and tourists to savor authentic Chongqing flavors free of charge. The celebration offered much more than just food—visitors strolled through bustling markets, admired the scenic surroundings, and indulged in local delicacies that showcased the city’s rich culinary heritage. Whether a longtime resident or a first-time visitor, everyone found themselves immersed in the heartwarming and festive ambiance of Chongqing’s New Year traditions.
