Chongqing's Wushan Plums, Fuling Mustard, Fengjie Oranges Gain Global Fame

By YUTING CHEN|Feb 13,2025

Chongqing - On February 11, Mo Jie, deputy director of the Chongqing Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee, detailed the city’s push for rural revitalization and agricultural modernization at the “Six Zones and One Highland” press conference.

The "Six Zones" include the leading zone for high-quality development in western China, the inland opening-up international cooperation zone, the leading zone for comprehensive deepening of reform, the demonstration zone for modern megacity governance, the demonstration zone for urban-rural integration and rural revitalization, and the leading zone for building a Beautiful China. The "One Highland" focuses on strengthening Party building across the city.

Mo emphasized that Chongqing will leverage its mountainous terrain to develop eco-friendly agricultural industries. The city aims to promote the systematic and clustered development of trillion-yuan eco-agricultural industries to ensure a more abundant supply of essential food products, such as rice, meat, and vegetables, for its residents.

According to Mo, Chongqing has made significant progress in cultivating and expanding rural specialty industries. Last year, the city's grain production reached 11 million tons, a 16-year high. Meat production totaled 2.05 million tons, and aquatic product production reached 610,000 tons. Vegetable output rose to 24.36 million tons, while fruit production from orchards reached 6.13 million tons.

The food and agricultural processing sector grew by 4.3% year-on-year, with a value-added output of 267 billion yuan. Popular specialty products like Wushan crispy plums, Fuling pickled mustard, and Fengjie navel oranges are well-known domestically and abroad. Fuling pickled mustard has sold over 15 billion packs globally, and the brand value of Fengjie navel oranges now stands at 38.17 billion yuan (around $5.23 billion).

Chongqing plans to leverage its grain and oil production strengths, especially in the western region and Longxi River Basin. The city will implement the “ton-grain field” model, which targets 1,000 kilograms of grain per mu annually, and explore ways to boost yield by over 10%. The goal is to achieve a sown area of 30.2 million mu (20.01 billion square meters) and produce more than 21.8 billion jin (1.09 billion kilograms) of grain.

At the same time, the city will continue to develop its food and agricultural product processing industries by upgrading the "Top Leader Program" to attract key industry players and create blockbuster products valued at over 1 billion yuan and 50 million yuan.

Mo added that Chongqing plans to accelerate the digital transformation of the entire agricultural supply chain. The city will explore new models such as the "Industrial Brain + Future Farm," establishing industry-specific platforms for pigs, crispy plums, citrus fruits, and beef cattle. It will also promote the use of technologies such as autonomous agricultural machines and smart tractors, moving towards data-driven agriculture.

The city is also committed to fostering digital agriculture and e-commerce live streaming as new business models. It will implement specialized e-commerce marketing strategies, such as "customized agriculture." Chongqing aims to elevate its rural digital development level to 45%, maintaining its leadership in Western China.

By 2025, the city will continue to enhance and grow these rural industries, ensuring breakthroughs in agricultural and rural modernization and taking rural revitalization to the next level.
