BYD and DJI Launch the World's First In-Car Drone System 'Ling Yuan'

By HUXIN LUOYINGZHU CHEN|Mar 04,2025

Shenzhen - On March 2, Wang Chuanfu, Chairman and President of BYD, officially unveiled the Smart In-car Drone System at the launching event, developed in collaboration with DJI, named Ling Yuan.

The Ling Yuan System includes a smart in-car storage module, a positioning module for a car-mounted drone, and a customized DJI AIR 3s drone. Its software is powered by the self-developed Ling Yuan APP, which enables users to control the drone, track movements, capture aerial footage, leverage AI recognition, and edit videos with a single click.

Hundreds of drones lit up the night sky at the event in a dazzling display. They seamlessly formed the shape of a car—an impressive representation of BYD and DJI’s partnership and the growing convergence of the automotive and technology sectors.

This integration of drones and vehicles represents more than just a collaboration between BYD and DJI; it signals a deeper blending of the automotive and tech industries. Wang described this as a step forward in automotive intelligence. While most consumers associate automotive intelligence with features like smart cockpits and autonomous driving, BYD is working to integrate intelligent drone systems directly into its vehicles.

Roger Luo, President of DJI, noted that BYD is the first car manufacturer in the world to mass-produce vehicles with built-in drones. This collaboration enhances the functionality of new energy vehicles and broadens the range of drone applications. Luo added that the two companies plan to continue working together to explore new possibilities for smart electric vehicles.

A key focus of the release is how the smart in-car drone can be used. Wang pointed out that in scenarios like self-driving trips, camping, and off-road adventures, there is often a lack of convenient photographic tools. While such ideas have long appeared in sci-fi works, they have now become a reality.

Wang emphasized that BYD recognizes that achieving this vision requires bold ideas supported by solid technology. As early as 2016, BYD began exploring relevant technological solutions internally.

At the launch event, attendees experienced the Ling Yuan System's dynamic takeoffs, landings, and photography features, which provide 30 preset shooting templates, intelligent algorithms, and one-click video production.

In an interview with independent automotive media Peng Wei, he expressed optimism about the partnership: "BYD and DJI are combining hardware and software more closely than past collaborations, which often lacked this level of integration. This partnership helps close that gap."

After experimenting with the in-car drone, filmmaker Robert Michael Adolf, who juggles both photography and driving, remarked, "The in-car drone allows me to handle much of the filming on my own, making my work much easier."
