By FENG, XIAOLOU|Mar 07,2025

Chongqing - On March 6, the British Consulate-General in Chongqing hosted a reception to celebrate its 25th anniversary.

The past 25 years have seen robust collaboration between the UK and Southwest China in government, business, and cultural spheres. Notable visits from UK officials, including former Foreign Secretary David Miliband and the Lord Mayor of London, have strengthened ties. Chongqing has also established sister-city relationships with Wales and Leicester. Later this month, a delegation of mayors from six UK cities and regions will visit Chongqing and Chengdu to explore new opportunities for cooperation.

Dame Caroline Wilson, British Ambassador to China, highlighted the strategic decision to establish the consulate in Chongqing, recognizing the city's pivotal role in driving development in western China. Over the past 25 years, the consulate has become one of the region's most active foreign diplomatic institutions, fostering government exchanges, trade and investment initiatives, and cultural and educational collaborations. "The consulate has served as a vital bridge between the UK and Chongqing, promoting cooperation, mutual understanding, and shared success," she said.

Anthony Preston, Consul-General to Chongqing and South West China, expressed his pride in marking this milestone during his tenure. Reflecting on his personal connection to Chongqing, which began in 2000, he recalled being captivated by the city's vibrant energy and stunning landscapes. "Over the years, I have witnessed Chongqing's remarkable growth and transformation, and I am committed to further strengthening and deepening the ties between the UK and this dynamic region," he said.

The UK remains one of Chongqing's most important European trade partners and a key source of investment and technology. With 106 British companies operating in Chongqing, totaling $575 million in investments, collaboration spans healthcare, advanced manufacturing, and renewable energy sectors. Major Chongqing-based companies, including Chang'an Group and CISDI, have also invested in the UK. British expertise has also left a lasting mark on Chongqing's iconic landmarks, such as Raffles City, Eling 2nd Factory, and the Jiangbei International Airport Terminal 2. The upcoming Terminal 3B, designed by renowned British architect Zaha Hadid, is set to open this month.

Meanwhile, cultural and educational exchanges have also flourished, with the Chevening Scholarship supporting over 200 talented individuals from southwest China to pursue master's degrees in the UK and events like the "Boundless British Music Festival," "British Carnival," and "Shakespeare Lives" bringing British culture closer to Chongqing residents.

The consulate plans to organize over 20 events across southwest China from March to December 2025 to celebrate the anniversary. These will include high-level government and business visits, expert exchanges, and a series of engaging cultural activities. These initiatives aim to reinforce the UK's partnership with Chongqing and the broader region. As the British Consulate-General in Chongqing looks to the future, its 25th anniversary celebrations underscore a commitment to deepening collaboration and fostering mutual understanding between the UK and southwest China.
