ChongqingThe 2025 Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Film Festival’s much-anticipated FilmMart officially opened on July 4 at the Yongchuan International Convention and Exhibition Center, attracting film professionals from across the SCO member states. The vibrant atmosphere set the stage for new partnerships and cross-cultural exchanges, confirming Chongqing’s growing status as a hub for the international film industry.

A Hub for Exchange and Innovation

The SCO FilmMart features a packed schedule, including an opening ceremony, the SCO International Film Technology Alliance launch, technology project roadshows, and industry roundtable forums. One of the highlights is the dedicated exhibition area showcasing projects from ten countries, including China, Belarus, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Mongolia. The exhibition displays culturally rich film projects, scripts, and copyright resources, providing a platform for filmmakers to present their creative strengths and explore opportunities for collaboration.

Before the official opening, delegates from all countries eagerly visited the various booths, engaging with the materials and snapping photos. The excitement only grew after the opening ceremony, as the exhibition floor became a dynamic meeting place for networking, project discussions, and forging new deals.

Turning Conversation into Cooperation

For many, the event’s greatest appeal is its efficiency in facilitating partnerships. Jonathan Shen, CEO of Shinework Media and producer of “The Composer”—the first co-production between China and Kazakhstan—headed straight to the Uzbekistan booth after the ceremony. He shared his enthusiasm about the fruitful talks for a second co-production, this time with Uzbek partners. “We’ve already scheduled a visit to Uzbekistan for further discussions. The convenience and efficiency of this platform are incredible,” he said.

Film director Xirzat Yahup is also involved in the new project, which will again use music as a cultural bridge. “We’re developing a story around the accordion to highlight the deep friendship between the two countries. This kind of platform accelerates progress that would otherwise require much more time and travel,” he noted.

The Uzbekistan booth, in particular, saw a steady stream of visitors throughout the morning, and lively discussions on co-productions and joint ventures took place.

International Filmmakers Eye China’s Vast Market

The market also saw strong interest from international participants looking to tap into China’s expansive film industry. Safar Khakdod, chairman of the Union of Cinematographers of Tajikistan, described the event as a key opportunity to build connections and learn from China’s fast-growing market. “For many Central Asian countries, our home markets are relatively small, but China is like half the world. Its market size, direction, output, and technology are invaluable for us,” he said.

First-time visitor Umair Nasir Ali, a director from Pakistan, echoed this sentiment, noting the unique chance to access films from countries like China, Mongolia, Tajikistan, and Russia—many of which are hard to find in Pakistan. “Here, I can see films and meet creators in person, which is an invaluable learning opportunity.”

He also praised Chongqing as a world-class filming location. “Its landscapes and cultural heritage are unforgettable. For filmmakers, having access to such diverse environments and advanced technology makes Chongqing an ideal center for the film industry. I hope to work here soon.”

As the SCO FilmMart continues, it stands as a testament to cinema's power in building cultural bridges and creating new opportunities. For filmmakers across the SCO, Chongqing is quickly becoming a focal point for creativity, collaboration, and growth in the global film industry.
