Street Interview on Chinese Valentine’s Day (Qixi Festival): What Is Love?

Chongqing—As couples across China exchange gifts and whisper affections on the Qixi Festival, many pause to reflect on a love story that has defined the nation’s romantic imagination for over two millennia. Known widely as the Chinese Valentine's Day, Qixi is far more than a day for romance—it is a cultural heirloom woven from myth, astronomy, and ancient rituals.

The festival's origins date back to the Han Dynasty and revolve around the tragic yet hopeful tale of Zhinü, the Weaving Maid, and Niulang, the Cowherd. Separated by the Milky Way, the star-crossed lovers are permitted to meet only once a year—on the seventh night of the seventh lunar month—when magpies form a bridge across the heavens.

This legend is not merely a story of love, but also one of dedication, sacrifice, and the belief that genuine connection can defy even celestial boundaries. It mirrors traditional values such as loyalty, familial devotion, and the harmony between humanity and nature.

Unlike Western Valentine's Day, which often emphasizes consumerism, Qixi has historically been marked by subtle customs deeply tied to feminine ingenuity and seasonal change. In ancient times, young women would conduct rituals to plead for wisdom, dexterity in needlework, and a good marriage. These practices, known as qǐqiǎo, or “pleading for skill,” often involved offering fruits, displaying handicrafts, or threading needles under the moon.

Another custom included gazing at the stars - Vega and Altair, representing Zhinü and Niulang - to contemplate love's trials and triumphs. In some regions, people would release lotus lanterns into rivers or pray under grapevines, believing they might overhear the whispers of the reunited lovers.

Though some of these traditions have faded with time, their essence lingers. Modern Qixi now blends ancient symbolism with contemporary expressions of love: couples dine under the stars, write letters, or spend meaningful time together. What remains unchanged is the day’s power to make people pause and celebrate connection in all its forms - whether romantic, familial, or platonic.

As night falls, lights glow and voices soften. Whether through a whispered wish, a thoughtful gift, or a quiet moment under the stars, millions continue to honor a story written in the heavens - a story that, like love itself, endures across time.
