The festival's origins date back to the Han Dynasty and revolve around the tragic yet hopeful tale of Zhinü, the Weaving Maid, and Niulang, the Cowherd. Separated by the Milky Way, the star-crossed lovers are permitted to meet only once a year—on the seventh night of the seventh lunar month—when magpies form a bridge across the heavens.
