By NATALIA VAKHRUSHEVA|Oct 29,2025

Chongqing — The Cup of China, part of the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating series, has sparked new momentum in Chongqing’s sports and tourism economy. The three-day international event drew more than 713,000 visitors and generated about 390 million yuan ($54 million) in regional spending.

Launched on Oct. 24 at Huaxi LIVE·Yudong, the competition brought together 60 elite skaters from 14 countries and regions, delivering world-class performances that blended athletic precision with artistic flair. Organizers said 76 percent of spectators traveled from outside Chongqing, underscoring the city’s growing reputation as a destination for global sporting events.

Local authorities leveraged the tournament to integrate sports with tourism and consumption, introducing themed promotions across dining, lodging, transport, shopping, and entertainment. Popular routes featuring South and East Hot Spring invited visitors to experience both the city’s urban energy and countryside charm.

“I came from Shanghai just to watch the Grand Prix,” said spectator Zeng Jiali. “After the competition, I’m visiting a few scenic spots nearby.”

The event also strongly boosted Banan District, where total retail sales of consumer goods reached 54.85 billion yuan from January to September, up 5.2 percent year-on-year. Accommodation and catering revenues increased by 11.6 percent and 8.2 percent, respectively, among the fastest growth rates in Chongqing’s core districts.

At the city level, Chongqing led China’s five designated international consumption center cities in retail performance during the first half of 2025. Total retail sales of consumer goods reached 830 billion yuan ($115 billion), up 4.5 percent year-on-year — the fastest pace among its peers, according to the Chongqing Municipal Commission of Commerce.

"In the future, we will continue to attract and host high-level sports competitions, turning the popularity of these events into lasting momentum for high-quality urban development," said a Banan District official.

From the Cup of China and WTT Chongqing Champions to international curling tournaments and large-scale concerts, Chongqing is deepening the integration of sports, culture, and tourism — transforming event-driven enthusiasm into long-term economic vitality.
