Chongqing - The classic Chinese dance drama "Water Moon Luoshen" will be staged at the Chongqing Grand Theatre on November 26, 2025. First performed in 2010, this production has been continually refined over the past decade and has toured across China with more than 160 performances, 57 of which were organized by Shanghai Jingying Culture Media Group. One of its segments, "Falling Veil," went viral online, resonating deeply with audiences and amassing 7.895 million likes, while topics related to the show have garnered over 1 billion views. Based on the timeless works of famous Chinese poet Cao Zhi, along with Central Plains folklore, the dance drama masterfully integrates poetry, literature, ritual, music, and dance, radiating a classical charm.
Over a thousand years ago, Cao Zhi’s "Ode to the Goddess of the Luo River" depicted the goddess as "light as a startled swan, graceful as a roaming dragon." Today, "Water Moon Luoshen" brings this ethereal image to life on stage. The story follows Cao Zhi, who envisions the goddess in a trance, while in reality, he shares a deep but restrained connection with Zhen Mi, the favorite consort of his brother Cao Pi. Torn by Cao Pi’s suspicions and the power struggle between them, Cao Zhi endures inner torment, and the intertwined fates of the three create a poignant and dreamlike romance. Rather than presenting a simplistic love triangle, the production delves into a captivating historical and cultural space, blending myth and history against the backdrop of the turbulent Three Kingdoms period, allowing the audience to appreciate the spirit of the Jian’an era in an artistic setting.

Choreographically innovative, "Water Moon Luoshen" blends modern and ballet elements with classical Chinese dance. Through expressive solos, duets, trios, and group dances, the performers vividly convey the story and emotions. A standout segment, "Lotus Pond," features dancers holding lanterns and softly humming Cao Pi’s poem while stepping in rhythm—a creative adaptation of the Han dynasty "stamping dance" that balances strength and grace. Another highlight is the integration of recitals and choral passages from classical poetry, enhancing the dramatic ambience with a blend of silent movement and powerful vocals.
