Short Drama Reigniting Chongqing's Motorcycle Legend

By FENG, XIAOLOU|Nov 19,2025

Chongqing - Since its release this September, the Chongqing-set short drama "Iron Cavalry Chasing the Wind" has garnered nationwide attention, accumulating more than 120 million views. Produced by Maiya Media, the drama combines local dialect, industrial memory, and human resilience, injecting fresh energy into China's rapidly growing short-drama market. It has recorded a heat index of 36.29 million on Hongguo and entered the platform's trending chart four times.

Set in the 1990s, a pivotal decade when reform policies reshaped China's industrial landscape, the short drama revisits Chongqing's rise as the country's "motorcycle capital." Its protagonist, Jiang Tiejun, leaves a stable job at a gear factory to open a modest repair shop, stepping into the wave of private entrepreneurship that transformed the city's motorcycle industry. His personal struggle mirrors the trajectory of countless real-life innovators who helped build China's first homegrown motorcycle brands.

Through rich, grounded storytelling, the drama captures the era's hardship and momentum. Jiang endures ridicule from former colleagues, a painful marital breakdown, and the risks of dismantling an imported motorcycle to study its internal structure - all driven by a single ambition: to break foreign monopolies on engine technology and create motorcycles ordinary Chinese families could afford. Over time, he grows from a self-taught mechanic into the founder of a manufacturing plant, symbolizing the spirit of young dreamers who seized the moment to reshape Chongqing's industrial identity.

Authenticity is the show's strength. Filmed entirely in Chongqing, the production team sought out locations that reflect the city's unique topography and 1990s ambience, from winding mountain roads to neighbourhood stairways. Vintage motorcycles were sourced from local collectors and restored for on-set riding. Supporting characters such as the loyal Long Ge, the principled racer Daoge, and the warm-hearted female lead Yang Yuqing enrich the emotional landscape and highlight the solidarity characteristic of Chongqing's grassroots communities. Performed entirely in the Chongqing dialect and featuring mostly Sichuan-Chongqing actors, the drama vividly restores the atmosphere of the era.

At a time when regulators are urging more realistic and grounded storytelling, Iron Cavalry: Chasing the Wind stands out as a tribute to craftsmanship, local culture, and national industry. With a concise yet powerful narrative force, the short drama celebrates the determination of ordinary people in Chongqing who chased opportunities.
