Chongqing - Professor Xiong Yu, a Chongqing native and alumnus of Chongqing University, has received a recognition award from the UK House of Lords for his contributions to applying artificial intelligence to social transformation.

Now a professor at the University of Surrey and a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in the UK, Xiong was presented the award by Rami Ranger, a member of the House of Lords. The recognition highlights his efforts to use AI technologies to address real-world social challenges.

Born and raised in Chongqing, Xiong studied at Chongqing No. 8 Middle School before enrolling at Chongqing University. He credits the university’s rigorous academic training and inspiring learning environment for shaping the standards that later guided his academic career in the United Kingdom.

Xiong expressed hope to strengthen cooperation between Chongqing and the UK by promoting academic research partnerships, business collaboration, and broader exchanges. He believes growing connections between the two sides create valuable opportunities for deeper cooperation in education, research, and innovation.

Having spent more than 15 years celebrating the Spring Festival in the UK, Xiong keeps Chinese traditions alive with his family through dumplings, lantern decorations, and watching the Spring Festival Gala online. For him, technology helps recreate a sense of home across distances, just as it connects people and ideas across borders.
